2018 Orange Wine "80 / 20" (Forlong, Bodegas)

Bodega de Forlong, “80/20” Orange Wine, Cadiz, Andalucía, Spain 2018

{organic} 100% Palomino, Pedro Ximinez skins

LEMON, PINEAPPLE, LIGHTLY FUNKY. CHALK & ORANGE PEEL

Wondering what orange wine is? Here’s the scoop: white wine grapes are pressed, then the juice is left to ferment with the skins instead of being filtered off. This imparts more body, color, and texture, as well as yielding a much more natural, less processed wine. Quirkily, grapes most often found in sherry are used here: Palomino grapes for the juice, with Pedro Ximinez skins added to the fermentation and left to mingle for 25 days.

Serving Suggestion: Lemon grilled tilapia w/ jasmine rice. Any combo of hard sheep’s milk cheeses, such as Manchego, Roncal, or Ossau-Iraty.

2017 Orange Wine "Amigo Imaginario" (Forlong, Bodegas)

Bodega de Forlong, Orange Wine “Amigo Imaginario”, Cadiz, Andalucía, Spain 2017

{organic} 100% Palomino aged 25 days on Pedro Ximenez skins (Amphora & oak aged)

BLOOD ORANGE, CELERY SEED, NUTTY SHERRY HINT.

This is one of the most adventurous and exciting wines we’ve tasted recently. An orange wine from the sherry region, aged in barrels previously used in the production of Oloroso. The “imaginary friend” of this wine is the skins of Pedro Ximenez, instead of its own Palomino skins, which winegrower Alex says are not as delicious tasting as those of PX. This is not only an exotic and interesting production method, but the wine tastes fantastic and engaging!

Serving Suggestion: Grilled beef tenderloin topped w/ sauteed foie gras & drizzled w/ a Pedro Ximenez reduction & sprinkled w/ fried shallot slices.

2020 Orange Wine "Müeller Time/SanderStruck" (Staffelter Hof, Weingut)

Weingut Staffelter Hof, Orange Wine "Müeller Time/SanderStruck", Mosel, Germany 2018

{organic} 100% Müller-Thurgau

GRANNY SMITH & PINEAPPLE, HAZY & HERBACEOUS, LEMONADE (WITHOUT THE SWEETNESS!)

More reminiscent of a gourmet Hefeweizen/lemonade shandy than the beer slogan its moniker seems to be derived from, this dry, super-session-able, orange-ish delight clocks in at a meager 11% alcohol and begs to be discovered as the diurnal-friendly guzzler that it is. But, as much fun as this is, it isn’t all fun, and there are as many layers of intrigue to this wine as there are puns wrapped up in its branding! Müller-Thurgau is an all-too-familiar yet mysterious offspring of Riesling celebrated by some but best known as bulk wine fodder. However, you’d never suspect that from this unique beauty.

Serving Suggestion: Reuben on pumpernickel w/ horseradish mustard & pickled beets. Ricotta pizza w/ pineapple, capers, & pickled onions.

2019 Orange Wine ''Abartig Einfach'' (Edelbauer, Christoph)

Christoph Edelbauer, Orange Wine "Abartig Einfach", Kamptal, Austria 2019

{organic} 50% Gewürztraminer, 50% Muscat

POMELO & BLOOD ORANGE, REFRESHINGLY ASTRINGENT, A HAZY SUNSET

Lush yet lithe, funky yet fresh, assertive yet approachable, this bottle is filled with delicious contradictions. This latest arrival from Kamptal's Christoph Edelbauer is forged from (yet unrecognizable as) Gewürztraminer and Muscat, wrapping the pair of typically hyper-aromatic varieties in a hazy, chiseled, orange package unto itself. Initially most reminiscent of pomelo or grapefruit, sharp, zesty citrus gives way to undercurrents of young persimmon and red fruit. The finish is lush and yeasty, taking the palate for quite the rollercoaster ride.

Serving Suggestion: Savory kimchi pancake w/ squid & extra scallions. Arugula/pomegranate salad w/ blue cheese & blood orange vinaigrette.

2019 Semi-Sparkling Orange Wine "Paleokerisio" (Glinavos, Domaine)

Domaine Glinavos, Semi-Sparkling Orange Wine "Paleokerisio", Ioannina, Greece 2019

Predominately Debina with a small amount of Vlahiko

SEMI-DRY SEMI-SPARKLER; DRIED APRICOTS & SPICE

Gather 'round, Greek geeks! This is a traditional semi-sparkling, semi-dry orange wine from Zitsa. Temperate climate and high altitude (up to 4,000 feet) helps preserve acidity - essential for any sparkling wine - in the native Debina grape. Suggestive of sweet dried apricots, a whiff of apple, baking spice, and a sherry-like oxidative quality ... and then along come the light bubbles and acidity to cleanse the palate. Clocking in at only 10.5% alcohol, it's light and refreshing, a great start (or end) to any meal.

Serving suggestion: Liver pâté w/ crusty bread & plenty of olives. Ricotta cheesecake w/ caramelized peach puree. Sitting on the porch swing on a cool fall evening, watching the leaves spiral down.

2018 Toscana Bianco "Solare" (Castellina, Fattoria)

Fattoria Castellina, "Solare" IGT Bianco, Tuscany, Italy 2018

{biodynamic} 100% Vermentino

PEAR SKIN & CANTALOUPE, LEMON ZEST, VIBRANT

Vermentino is something of a chameleon. It can be fun, fresh, and easygoing, or tropical and concentrated, or minerally and elegant. Increasingly, especially among Sardinian and Tuscan producers, we’re encountering enigmatically unconventional, almost-orange offerings like this one. Four days of skin contact give this wine a subtle yet unmistakable amber tone and a hint of tannic texture, while the winery’s proximity to the shore provides an intriguing suggestion of brininess on the nose.

Serving Suggestion: Calamari tempura. Sea bass w/ lemon garlic herb butter. Mediterranean salad w/ citrus-caper vinaigrette. Melon w/ prosciutto & goat cheese.
