2015 Cote-Rotie "Drevon" (Rosiers, Domaine de)

Domaine de Rosiers, Côte-Rôtie "Drevon", Northern Rhone, France 2015

{organic} 98% Syrah, 2% Viognier

BLACKBERRY & DATE, LEATHER & TOAST, EARTHY CACAO BUTTER

The steeply-inclined vineyards of Cote-Rotie overlook the picturesque riverside town of Ampuils. The imposing slopes of its Cote Brun constitute the Northern Rhone’s northernmost extreme and provide the world with some of the most revered Syrah – as beautiful and generous as it is brooding and inflexible. Here, we find the Drevon vineyard of Domaine de Rosiers yielding opaque, mauve elixirs which exemplify classical Syrah as it tastes on its home turf.

Serving Suggestion: Venison & duck stew w/ shallots, parsnips, & cardamom. Stir fried black wood ears, bamboo shoots, scallions, and bean sprouts.

2017 Cotes de Provence, Rouge (Pinchinat, Domaine)

Domaine Pinchinat, Cotes de Provence Rouge, Provence, France 2017

{organic} 90% Syrah, 10% Grenache

DRIED BLUEBERRIES, SUBTLE LAVENDER, PRETTY & FIRM

Alain de Welle is a nice, peaceful man. As the owner and manager of Pinchinat, it’s his vision that is expressed in each glass of his wine that is served these days. Although his family has farmed this vineyard for over two centuries (and the land farmed back to pre-history), his father broke from tradition and raised him in the nearby city of Aix. Alain returned to his family’s roots, (pun intended) and makes honest, modest wines that speak truths without trying to “blow you away."

Serving Suggestions: Marinated lamb kabobs; Charcoal-grilled ribeye with rosemary smoke & sea salt.

2012 Lirac Rouge "Dentelle Noire" (Rocalière, Domaine la)

Domaine la Rocalière, Lirac Rouge "Dentelle Noire," Rhone Valley, France 2012

{organic} 80% Syrah, 20% Grenache

MATURE SOFTNESS & SPICE. BLACKBERRY, KIRSCH, WHITE PEPPER & VIOLETS.

Sèverine Lemoine and her sister, Melainie Borrelly follow the Borrelly family winegrowing tradition and represent the third generation to farm the Rocalière estate. While its viticultural history may go back decades, the family isn’t opposed to experimenting with new ideas. Among these is the 2010 “Dentelle Noire” (black lace), which represents an unusually Syrah-dominant Southern Rhone. Inky and aromatic of black fruit, floral spice, and pepper, this matured red manages to be as compelling as it is commanding. This wine opens magnificently in the glass or decanter to show its best. Drinking perfect now, and for the next five years.

Serving Suggestion: Braised oxtail stew w/ garlic, clove, orange peel, & bay leaves. Smoky western-style barbecue.

Flegenheimer Bros., Shiraz, McLaren Vale, Australia 2017

Shiraz

DIZZYINGLY DARK FRUIT, DEFT & DENSE, BLACK PEPPER

The youngest member of the family, Benjamin Hammerschlag, decided to honor his heritage by making wine in McLaren Vale in South Australia. His Out of the Park Shiraz comes from high-altitude vineyards in the Seaview area and is aged in neutral oak to let the robust fruit and bright acidity shine through. If you enjoy heady, powerful reds full of fruit and spice, look no further!

2017 Shiraz "The Winner's Tank" (Eskadale Vineyards)

Eskadale Vineyards, "The Winner's Tank" Shiraz, Langhorne Creek, Australia 2017

100% Shiraz

BOLD, BERRY PRESERVES, SMOKE, LUSH, FAT & RUSTIC

In true Aussie spirit, a strong rivalry exists between the three neighboring towns in the local Australian Rules Football competition. Each year the winning team heads out to the vineyard to paint the tank in their team colors. Brief aging in French oak adds dimension, but the brevity means no real oakiness to be found. This is pure fruit driven Shiraz. So ripe, it might squirt juice if you squeeze the bottle too much. Glass staining purple-ness, strawberry and raspberry fruit, black licorice and freshness abound.

Serving Suggestion: Try this one with lamb chops marinated in rosemary and juniper berry or venison stew; Louisiana red beans and rice with Andouille.
