Produced biodynamically with love and a defiantly quality-over-quantity approach, the “Mezzanotte” is one of Lisa Gilbee’s profoundly Puglian offerings of Primitivo. An Australian native, she settled in Italy just over two decades ago and, after working as a winemaker both there and abroad, began Morella in 2004, naming the estate for her Italian husband. She’s fallen in love with the local Primitivo grape and with her vineyards, consisting of low-yeilding bush vines located less than two miles from the Ionian Sea. Balanced yet intensely concentrated with dried berryish fruit and peppery spice. Classic!

Serving Suggestion: Wood-fired pizza w/ ricotta, sausage, & basil. Coconut soup w/ rice vermicelli, cilantro, & ginger.

Cecil De Loach, along with his wife Christine, was almost singlehandedly responsible for codifying what we now know as sustainable farming in California. Oh, and he accomplished this while working as a firefighter at San Francisco's Hook & Ladder Station 10. In 2003 he sold his eponymous winery but kept his vineyard in the Russian River Valley to focus on stunning small production wines. 90% of this luxurious Zinfandel comes from 100+ year-old vines, and it spends 16 months in American Oak, bestowing a personality as big, bold, gregarious, and patriotic as fireworks on the 4th of July. Light some M80s and fire up the grill.

Serving Suggestion: Steaks or lambsicles, grilled over charcoal. Nothing more complicated than salt and attractive crosshatching.

RIPE BLACK RASPBERRY, SUMPTUOUS OAK & PEPPER, BRAMBLY COMPLEXITY

This bold red has everything we look for in Zin with all the fat trimmed away, leaving a wine which is still big and powerful but well balanced, solidly structured, and carrying its 15% alcohol impeccably. Terroir including volcanic soil and the calcium-rich remnants of an ancient seabed (as well as a cool, Pacific-influenced mesoclimate) contributes heavily to this wine's finesse and somewhat uncharacteristically sound constitution.

Serving Suggestion: Classic Santa Maria tri-tip cooked low and slow w/ spicy mustard new potato salad (bacon drippings optional). BBQ Tempeh with hearty soul-food sides.

As George Hendry says, the HRW Zinfandel is not quite good enough for their top zinfandel, but it is too good for them to sell it off to another winery. Only made in their "best" vintages and in a more quaffable style, this is delicious and rich. It's tangy and firm, and packed with Napa Zin goodness. Somewhat more "Italian" in style than typical monster California Zinfandels.

Serving Suggestions: Beef short ribs in a Memphis BBQ sauce. Blackened Grouper tacos with roasted Poblano guacamole.
