2020 Cannonau di Sardegna "San Costantino" (Parpinello, Poderi)

Poderi Parpinello, Cannonau di Sardegna, Sardinia, Italy 2020

100% Cannonau (Grenache)

BLACK RASPBERRY & CURRANT, OLIVE & ROSEMARY, OCEAN BREEZE

Known as Cannonau in Sardegna and as Grenache or Garnacha almost everywhere else, the fiercely Mediterranean variety thrives in sun-soaked, arid landscapes. Terrain which might appear pretty unaccommodating to most creatures gives these grapes the perfect environment to do their best work. Rising to the occasion in the rocky, windswept vineyards of Sardegna, the vines are quite comfortable and have colonized the islands vineyards for, perhaps, as many as 700 years. This rendition is ripe, spicy, modern, and powerful.

Serving Suggestion: Mutton w/ onion, garlic, & potatoes. Flatbread w/ sheep’s milk ricotta, Provençal herbs, & olives.

2018 Cotes du Rhone Rouge (Pères de l'Eglise, Domaine des)

Domaine des Pères de l'Eglise, Cotes du Rhone Rouge, Rhone Valley, France 2017

Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah

RED RASPBERRY & KIRSCH, BAZAAR-ISH POTPOURRI, ROSEMARY

The last few years have yielded a bounty of truly stunning Cotes du Rhones that seem to come closer to reaching the regal heights of their more impressively-pedigreed brethren from AOCs like Gigondas and Chateauneuf du Pape. This beautiful gem does indeed come from entirely within the bounds of the Chateauneuf AOC yet opts to declassify itself down to the sprawling and much more variable (in terms of quality) Cotes du Rhone AOC. The resemblance, however, is striking! Clocking in at a percentage point lower in alcohol content, it’s not quite as big as its big brothers, but the gorgeously exotic perfumes that we giddily associate with the output of the outstanding Peres de l’Eglise estate loudly affirm their presence during roll call.

Serving Suggestion: Roast turkey drumsticks w/ turmeric, cumin, paprika, & rosemary w/ corn oil-fried sweet potato wedges. Black bean soup w/ cayenne, cumin, garlic, & diced tomatoes over polenta.

2019 Cotes du Rhone Rouge ''Khayyâm'' (Mas de Libian)

Mas de Libian, Cotes du Rhone Rouge "Khayyâm", Southern Rhone, France 2019

[biodynamic] 75% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah

RASPBERRY & DRIED CRANBERRY, SWEET ROSEMARY, EARTH & DARK CHOCOLATE

"Drink wine. This is life eternal," famously wrote the ever beauty-seeking Omar Khayyam, and 800 years later, his attitudes and observations resound with timelessness. The Thibon sisters of Mas de Libian have named this delicious cuvée after the 12th century Persian poet and philosopher, and its exotic perfume of rosemary, lavender, and cocoa combine with violet-fruited romance in a sublimely exotic testament to his writings. This wine is hedonistic and nurturing, so heed the advice of Khayyam and take "the daughter of the vine to spouse".

Serving Suggestion: Lamb medallions simmered with sliced dates, saffron, and cumin. Okra, potatoes, and eggplant stewed with caramelized onions, tomato paste, black pepper, and a squeeze of lime juice (served over rice).

2018 Cotes du Rhone Villages (Sainte-Anne, Domaine)

Domaine Saint-Anne, Cotes du Rhone Villages, Southern Rhone, France 2017

70% Grenache, 30% Syrah

CURRANT & PLUM, WHITE PEPPER & MINERALLY EARTH, RED RASPBERRY PRESERVES

One of the fabulous yet relatively lesser-known corners of the Cotes-du-Rhone Villages occupying the “Right Bank,” Saint-Gervais lies northwest of Tavel and Lirac, at roughly the same latitude as Gigondas on the river’s opposite side. Domaine Saint-Anne’s Guy Steinmaier’s parents immigrated to Burgundy from Austria in the early 1930s, and he set up shop in this corner of the Rhone around 1960. This cuvée, in contrast to the estate’s more iconoclastic offerings, stars the traditional Grenache with a bit of Syrah and Cinsault providing additional interest. Concentrated red fruit, spice, and elegant earthy notes are firmly imbedded within this large, lively Mediterranean treat.

Serving Suggestion: Spicy, buttery, Ethiopian stewed beef. Black bean curry w/ diced bell peppers, tomato purée, coconut, & cumin.

{organic} 70% Grenache, 30% Syrah

BLACK RASPBERRY & CASSIS, SPICE & WHITE PEPPER, SWEET EARTH

Like the best producers of the southern Rhone Valley, Chateau de Marjolet crafts wines which are deft performers of a balancing act, finding that middle ground between power and finesse. This red from the village of Laudun brings a restrained clarity of dark fruit together with hedonistic pepper, spice, and a satisfying earthy richness which is exotic, elegant, and unmistakably Mediterranean. The Pontaud family, champions of terroir-driven wines and environmentally sound viticulture, have here brought to life the perfect Chateauneuf-du-Pape understudy.

Serving Suggestion: Lamb or beef w/ prunes and olives braised slowly in red wine and served with mashed potatoes. Punjabi curry w/ puréed tomatoes, cinnamon, & black cardamom.

{biodynamic} 70% Grenache, 30% Syrah

RED RASPBERRY & CURRANT, TANGY PRUNE, VIOLETS

Where Vacqueyras, Gigondas, and Beaumes come together in the northwestern reaches of the Mediterranean Vaucluse department, Domaine La Ligière plies its craft, siphoning the sun and the wholesome perfumes of the Provençal countryside into breathtaking wines. This Cotes du Rhone is a full stop lighter than the estate's profoundly rich Vacqueyras and Gigondas cuvées, but it shares with them a profoundly pretty aromatic mystique and spicy, violet-hued Grenache-ish-ness.

BLACKBERRY & RASPBERRY, WHITE PEPPER, ROASTED CACAO

This firm but elegantly structured Cotes-du-Rhone features many of the hallmarks of the more famous Gigondas and Cairanne regions on the opposite banks of the Rhone. Taking its title from the childhood nickname of Jean-Pierre Thibon, Libian's patriarch and father to the sisters who currently manage the estate, the "Bout d'Zan" shares with him a dark and very Mediterranean complexion. Richly ripe but chiseled and focused, this is one of the greatest Rhone values we've come across in ages!

{organic} 100% Garnacha/Grenache

BLACK RASPBERRY & DRIED MISSION FIG, VIOLETS & CARAMEL

This expansive yet energetic Grenache (Garnacha, of course, in its naive Spain) is one of the most powerful reds we’ve carried in BIB (Bag-In-Box format aka “box wine" or "boxed wine”). Bodegas Tempore is passionately organic, and we’ve been swooning over their fantastic values since we met them in the late aughts. Stylistically, this is Rhone-meets-Rioja with powerful ripe fruit, spice, and caramelized/vanilla richness. Pump it up!

Serving Suggestion: Morcilla / blood sausage (or fatty, flavorful salisbury steak if you’re a blood-hating wuss) w/ boiled & subsequently fried potatoes & sliced beets w/ parsley. Savory ricotta-fig toast w/ black truffle-infused olive oil (this is that kind of box!).

RICH BLACKBERRY, SPICY FIG, SILKY COCOA

This unctuously oaken take on Aragón's native Garnacha grape from Bodegas Tempore tips the scales. The iconic "G" spends four months in barrel, adding a creamy, cedary spice to what would already be a naturally luscious confection of a red. Redolent of spice, coffee, and cocoa, it pours a deep garnet-black in the glass and has a powerful silken texture reminiscent of Amarone What a sexy wine! A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Domaine Palon, Gigondas, Southern Rhone, France 2018

80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre

RED RASPBERRY & PLUM, WHITE PEPPER, GARRIGUES

“Delicate for Gigondas” shouldn’t suggest that a wine is delicate, but this more fruit & spice-driven offering from the Southern Rhone’s home of hardest-hitting, most brooding offerings is indeed a gentler rendition than the proverbial textbook might suggest. Reddish berry fruit and fresh, food-friendly acidy stand above the brooding black fruit, earth, and tannin that are first and foremost hallmarks of the appellation.

Serving suggestion: Vit nau cam (Vietnamese twist on duck à l’orange w/ addition of lemongrass, lime, Thai chilies, & ginger). Roasted sweet potato enchilada w/ grilled mushrooms, red peppers, & sour cream.

Domaine La Ligiere, Vacqueyras Rouge "Point G", Rhone Valley, France 2015

{biodynamic} 100% Grenache from old vines

BLACK CHERRY & RASPBERRY, DARK ROAST COFFEE, SUPPLE

The Southern Rhone revolves around Grenache, particularly from old, gnarly vines. The vines in this vineyard are so old they predate the naming of Vacqueyras as an AOC, the the birth of the winemaker, and even the founding of the estate itself! Biodynamically farmed and fermented with ambient yeasts, this cuvée is special for its lush vibrance of ripe red and black fruits as well as a tantalizing warmth of coffee beans and fig. This suppleness is set beautifully against firm tannic structure. Serious enough consider cellaring but packed with enough finesse to be cracked tonight. That’s the point!

Serving Suggestion: Pan-roasted pork belly w/ spiced red plum, ginger, & rhubarb. Lamb w/ walnut, fig, & goat cheese salad. Cajun portobello sandwich w/ avocado & remoulade.
