2018 Blanc de Noir Trocken (Schneider, Georg Albrecht)

Georg Albrecht Schneider, Blanc de Noir Trocken, Rheinhessen, Germany 2018

100% Pinot Noir

WHITE STONEFRUIT & QUINCE, GENTLE FLINT & FOREST BLOSSOMS

While white Pinot Noir might not be foremost on the radar for most of us, the red grape variety has a wealth of experienced being vinified without skin contact in order to produce clear-ish (aka white) wines. In fact, France’s Champagne began utilizing this technique even before exploring sparkling wine! This still rendition from the always awesome Albrecht Schneider brings together piquant orchard-ish notes with a delicately floral perfume in round yet fresh, elegant package that’s memorable, distinctive, and delicious.

Serving Suggestion: Pork chops w/ baked apples & halved boiled potatoes w/ dill. Savory beet salad w/ citrus, chèvre, & quince/sherry vinaigrette.

2018 Bourgogne Rouge (Rossignol, Domaine Philippe)

Domaine Phillippe Rossignol, Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy, France 2018

{biodynamic} 100% Pinot Noir

RED PLUM & BLACK CHERRY, BRIGHT & BALANCED

The Cote d’Or’s northern half, the Cote de Nuits, has a lot of competition from its neighbors throughout the rest of Burgundy, but, with the exception of a few enclaves of the Cote de Beaune (it’s immediately southern counterpart), few regions would be nominated as the very best of the best for Pinot Noir production. This one from Philippe Rossignol, a producer whose home base lies in the illustrious Gevrey-Chambertin, features the impressive balance of structure and perfume that helps make some of its more loftily labeled counterparts as impressive as they are.

Serving Suggestion: Wood-fired pizza w/ basil & shiitakes. Firsthand foods bratwurst w/ crispy fried collard greens & radish.

Tenuta Mazzolino, Pinot Nero "Terrazze", Pavia Lombardia, Italy 2020

100% Pinot Nero

BLACKBERRIES, RIPE RED RASPBERRIES, VIOLETS, SOFT & SMOOTH

Wander due south from the industrial cityscape of Milan, and after a few miles Italy really starts to look like ITALY. This easy-going example is lush and approachable with soft floral notes and ripe red fruit. It fits right in with other high-quality, low-price Pinot, except with a strain of acidity that marks it as uniquely Italian. Almost Dolcetto-esque.

Lingua Franca, Pinot Noir "Avni", Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley, Oregon, USA 2019

{biodynamic} 100% Pinot Noir

ELEGANT, SMOOTH, & AROMATIC. CHERRY & EARTH, LIGHT SPICE

Lingua Franca not only refers to a universal language, “but also means ‘to speak frankly,’ just as our wines aim to speak directly of their terroir.” Hailing from the volcanic soil of Lingua Franca’s Eola-Amity hillside vineyards, this eloquent wine speaks volumes. Red fruits, river stone, dried leaves, and rose petals on the nose introduce flavors of dusty cherry, raspberry, and earth, all accented by juicy acidity. The conversation closes with a long yet fresh finish.

2019 Pinot Noir ''Reserva'' (Apaltagua, Viña)

Vina Apaltagua, Pinot Noir "Reserva", Colchagua Valley, Chile 2019

100% Pinot Noir

PLUM & CRAISIN, JUICY, LUSH, SUBTLE SPICY OAK

From Apaltagua's vineyards in Chile's cool and Pacific-influenced region of southern Curico comes this most impressive of Pinot Noir values. Appropriately delicate but with uncharacteristic (at this price range!) depth and substance, this is a Pinot that you can really sink your teeth into. 2017 Pinot Noir ''Southern Valleys'' (Spy Valley)

Spy Valley, Pinot Noir "Southern Valleys", Marlborough, New Zealand 2017

100% Pinot Noir

JUICY CHERRYISH FRUIT MARBLED WITH HERBACEOUS SPICE AND NOTES OF RUSTIC UNDERBRUSH

Firm, classic, and with brambly undercurrents that remind us of fall, this Marlborough Pinot stylistically rises, perhaps, somewhere between its famous colleagues further south in Central Otago and those from across the Pacific in Oregon’s Willamette. Herbaceous spice and rustic underbrush notes marble juicy cherryish fruit that is unmistakably that of Pinot Noir. Spy Valley takes its eccentric name (and Morse code-adorned label) from proximity to a nearby secure communications base, but the estate isn’t secretive about its passion for terroir and sustainability.

Serving Suggestions: Shepherd’s pie w/ ground mutton, onions, & peas topped w/ smashed &/or scalloped sweet potatoes. Pizza w/ pecorino, fiddleheads, leeks, & sliced grape tomatoes.

2019 Pinot Noir Alsace (Baur, Charles)

Charles Baur, Pinot Noir, Alsace, France 2019

{organic} 100% Pinot Noir

SILKY BLACK PLUM, SOFT HERBS & EARTH, ELEGANT

Arnaud Baur is proud of his organic vineyards in Alsace, where organic isn't the norm. He points to the brown, lifeless rows of his neighbor's non-organic vineyards, a stark contrast to his vibrantly green vines. A Pinot Noir from Alsace, despite being the region’s most significant red grape, is something we don’t see every day. Historically it's been too cold here to ripen red grapes, but as the world warms, spots like this are increasingly producing delicate reds.

Serving suggestion: Wintery fare: choucroute garnie (sauerkraut, sausage & potatoes in white wine) or a holiday feast w/ a roast bird & root veggies.

Truchard Vineyards, Pinot Noir, Carneros, Napa Valley, CA 2019

100% Pinot Noir

BLACK CHERRY & FOREST FRUIT, DILL & VANILLA, FIRMLY STRUCTURED

Carneros has long represented one of California’s brightest points for exceptional Pinot Noir, and this offering from Truchard displays the intensity and elegance that one would hope to encounter in the best and boldest of the region. Harkening back to the variety’s rising star of the 90s, it simultaneously exceeds and defies expectations with impressive concentration, assertive black tea tannin, and elegant citrusy undercurrents that are vibrant and mouthwatering. Kickin’ it old school and making no compromises!

2016 Pinot Noir Estate "Shea Vineyard" (Shea Wine Cellars)

Shea Wine Cellars, Estate Pinot Noir "Shea Vineyard", Yamhill-Carlton District, Willamette Valley, Oregon, US 2016

BLACK CHERRY, VIOLET, MUSHROOM, RICH & LENGTHY

Shea Vineyards used to sell their entire crop to high-end Pinot producers throughout Oregon, and remains one of the most sought after growers on the West Coast. They figured they ought to keep some of the good stuff for themselves, so they started with this Estate bottling from their most serendipitous lots. This is a fine example of how Oregon Pinot Noir can gracefully walk the line between Burgundian and New World style wine, with earthy notes and hearty acidity backing up ripe, lip-smacking dark fruit.

Serving Suggestions: Pork loin with red onion compote and a side of warm Bibb salad with Oregon smoky blue cheese and hazelnuts.
