2018 Bordeaux Rouge (Mendis, Chateau de)

Ch. de Mendis, Bordeaux Rouge, Bordeaux, France 2018

{sustainable} 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon

REAL BORDEAUX THAT'S REALLY DRINKABLE

Mendis is the sort of red Bordeaux we could drink everyday with a home cooked meal or after dinner with a movie. This is affordable, ready to drink Bordeaux. Bordeaux is the home to Cabernet and Merlot grapes. Mendis is a delicious blend on a foundation of Merlot then layered with Cab Sauv. The nose shows white pepper and sweet spices leading to Mendis' deep color revealing the blackberry fruit we love from Merlot with a shot of Cab to give it a backbone and anchor the fruit.

2018 Bordeaux Rouge (Moulin de Mallet, Chateau)

Chateau Moulin de Mallet, Bordeaux Rouge, Bordeaux, France 2018

90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc

FORESTY BLACKBERRY & RED-FLESHED PLUM, ROASTED CACAO, SAVORY HERB

Hailing from the southeasternmost reaches of the sprawling viticultural kingdom broadly known as Bordeaux, this astonishingly generous, captivating value is a bit like mana from the heavens for those of us who don’t drink distinctive, assertive Claret as often as we’d like because of how expensive it’s become. Predominantly Merlot and showing the chocolatey, coffee-like, brownish-ness (in flavor, not pigment) that beautiful Bordeaux Merlot famously does, this broad shouldered, confident cuvée invites us to hang out as often as we like, palling around for beef Bourguignon or burgers and fries as our weeknight whims or weekend grillings and chillings may dictate. So good!

Serving Suggestion: Beef Bourguignon or Burgers & fries. Mashed potatoes w/ shiitake mushroom gravy & scallions.

{sustainable} 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon

RICH STRAWBERRY & SUBTLE EARTH, SILKY BODY, SOFT TANNIN

Red wine from Entre-Deux-Mers is a rare find, and we are lucky to have found an excellent example from Chateau Grand-Portail. Young winemaker Olivier Cailleux grows his Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines on a small individual plot surrounding an old stone cross (a marker along the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela) where they benefit from high elevation and generous sun exposure. A palate of plush red berry fruit is backed by mellow tannins and a silky smooth body, resulting in a fresh and friendly style of Bordeaux.

CONCENTRATED DARK FRUIT, HAZELNUT & MOCHA, SERIOUS YET SUPPLE

New Zealand native Nick Goldschmidt has been ingrained in viticulture and winemaking for 35 years. Having relocated to California in 1989, his tenure as a flying winemaker, consultant, and sought-after gun-for-hire became the stuff of legend. He gradually left these occupations behind as his clients were increasingly purchased by wine conglomerates. In 2008, he and his wife, Yolyn, established Trig Point, acquiring vineyards that Nick had worked with since 1993. The Merlot features locally originating clonal selections, and emerges as a supple powerhouse whose appeal should be very compatible with the tastes of muscular Napa Cab lovers. Vive le Merlot!

RIPE, POWERFUL, LUSH & PACKED WITH DARK FRUIT

If you aren't familiar with the "Garagiste" movement in Bordeaux, then this would be a great introduction. Philippe Durand puts in a lot of extra work in the vineyard - including de-budding, short pruning, and removing leaves - to make sure that the grapes coming in at harvest are intensely flavored and flawless. At harvest, the tiny grapes from 145 year old Merlot vines have been examined by no fewer than four people. The result is a powerhouse of richness and dark berry perfection.
