2019 Nero d'Avola "Nero di Lupo" (COS, Azienda Agricola)

Azienda Agricola COS, "Nero di Lupo", Sicilia, Italy 2019

{organic} 100% Nero d'Avola

Nero d'Avola is one of those grapes that has such interesting and dynamic flavors that it's hard not to love. It is a flavor that has become associated with Southern Italian cuisine since it is grown not only in Sicily, but throughout the lower "boot" of Italy. Often rustic, earthy and raisiny, the subtle charm can be crushed by the heat, which will turn the sugary grapes into harsh wines. At COS, the grapes are harvested before getting too ripe and cautiously crafted into pretty wine in a cold, clean cellar. The result is one of Sicily's gifts to the world. Don't miss it.

Serving Suggestions: Perfection with charcoal-grilled lamb heavily crusted with rosemary, garlic and lemon. Firm, aged pecorino cheeses with capers on the side drizzled with olive oil.

2019 Nero d'Avola "Tenuta Ibidini" (Valle dell'Acate)

Valle dell'Acate "Tenuta Ibidini", Nero d'Avola, Sicilia, Italy 2019

100% Nero d'Avola

Tenuta Ibidini (pronounced ‘bidini) takes its name from the ancient root word Bidis, the name for the early Hellenic settlers in the area. Tradition has it that Nero d'Avola was brought to Sicily by the Greeks, though it is also known as "Calabrese," suggesting it may have come from the region of Calabria. Regardless of its origins, it is the most planted variety on the island and produces deeply colored wines ranging in style from youthful and juicy to rich and complex. This version offers tremendous bang for the buck with its dark fruit and oh so drinkable and friendly tannins.

Serving Suggestion: Friendly enough for roasted meaty fish like cod with a meat stock reduction sauce; venison grilled with juniper berries.
