Domaine la Bouysse, Blanc "B" (Aude-Hauterive), Languedoc, France, 2020

{organic} 80% Grenache Blanc, 20% Chardonnay

STONE FRUIT & RIPE CITRUS, HONEYSUCKLE & GARDENIA, WHITE PEPPER

Not far from Grenache Blanc's northeastern Spanish origins, this ripe rendition (w/ a dash of Chardonnay) is fresh, full, and brimming with sunshiny energy. Siblings Martine & Christophe make us so happy! We've been working with them for well over a decade to bring the gems of their southwestern corner of the Languedoc to the Triangle. This one bursts with the flavors and aromas of white flowers and peach with glimpses of mandarin orange.

Serving Suggetions: Plump prawns w/ a mango lime marinade & frites w/ aioli. Orange-glazed chicken thighs w/ jalapeno jelly & jasmine rice w/ toasted hazelnuts.

{biodynamic} Bourboulenc, Clairette, Vermentino

FLORAL, MINERAL, REFRESHING, CITRUS & HINTS OF TROPICALITY.

Borie la Vitarele, in the heart of the esteemed Saint Chinian region, benefits from the warm climate and clayey-limestone soil and has been organic and biodynamic since 1998. This white Rhone blend, a harder-to-find style, is fresh, dry, unoaked, and silky. Its balanced mineral, gentle white fruit, medium body, and peach notes are as refreshing as a Mediterranean breeze. A fantastic summer sipper on its own or with lighter fare or seafood.

2019 Blanc "Les Jacquaires" (Colombière, Chateau La)

Chateau La Colombière, Blanc "Les Jacquaires", Southwest, France 2019

{biodynamic} 40% Chenin Blanc, 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Bouysselet Blanc

RIPE BOSC PEAR, GREEN APPLE AND SPICE, FRONTON EST BON

Fronton’s Chateau la Colombiere has long championed not just the traditional grapes of their corner of Sud Ouest France, but also the obscure ones. So it comes as somewhat of a surprise that this vintage skips the Mauzac and Len de l’El of previous years for Chenin and Sauvignon Blanc. Colombiere still puts their distinctive touch on this blend by adding 20% Bouysslet Blanc, a grape almost extict before they rescued it from a vine nursery. The Bouysselet adds just hint of waxy richness, while its partners bring snappy freshness.

Serving Suggestion: Claypot crab w/ brown sugar, sesame, & glass noodles. Tropical slaw w/ pineapple, mango, cilantro, & lime juice.

{biodynamic} 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Muscat, 20% Verdil

ELEGANTLY TROPICAL, SPICY, EXOTIC BASIL

This is a very limited white from Casa Los Frailes. Only 500 cases are produced each year from meticulously selected grapes, and the result is every bit as exotic and enchanting as it is rare. With bright tangy fruit reminiscent of tangerine, white peach, and mango and beautiful flourishes of basil, shea butter, and vanilla, there's no mistaking that this is truly something special. A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Serving Suggestion: Paella featuring squid, mussels, and lobster with saffron and paprika. Vietnamese seafood stew with thick rice noodles, basil, lemongrass, and coriander.

Can Feixes, "Blanc Selecció", Penedes, Spain 2018

Parellada, Macabeo, Chardonnay, Malvasia de Stiges

LEMON & PEAR, ULTRA ZESTY, FIRM FINISH

From the highest elevation vineyard in all of the Penedès appellation comes this sophisticated white from just outside of Barcelona. This is perhaps Spain's equivalent to the famously fine, very dry wines of Chablis, Muscadet, and Rheingau. This blend is typically used to make Cava, but this still wine gives us a closer look at their subtle and complex layers. This has been a favorite of ours for years!

Serving Suggestions: Pure, unadorned oysters or steamed clams. Sashimi or simple haricot verts.

{organic} 50% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clairette, 20% Ugni Blanc

STONE FRUIT & TROPICAL VIBES, FLORAL & LUSH

Rhone whites are absolutely delightful, and it's a shame that we don't encounter them more often, but it's understandable as they only account for about 5% of the prolific valley's total output. This golden-hued gem from the Chateauneuf maestroes at Peres de l'Eglise is all up in the house - exotically perfumed and luscious yet dry and youthfully refreshing - just the sort of DAILY™ Rhone white sipper that we'd keep our fingers crossed for.

2018 Blanco (Forlong, Bodegas)

Bodega de Forlong, Blanco, Cadiz, Andalucía, Spain 2018

{organic} 90% Palomino, 10% Pedro Ximenez (Amphora aged)

LEMON, SAGE, SALINE MINERAL. DRY, JUICY, CLEAN & PRETTY.

As the label suggests, this wine is all business when it comes to seafood. Juicy, dry and evocative of the sea, even before the aromas of your seafood dinner have chimed in. Made from the key grapes of the Sherry (Jerez) region, but not given the distinctive sherry-aging treatment; so think subtle Chablis, Verdicchio, or Muscadet as benchmarks. This young couple, Alex and Rocio, are hitting it out of the park. A Wine Authorities exclusive.

Serving Suggestion: Fried oysters or clams. Shrimp a la plancha. Flounder meunier. Simply stir-fried vegetables. Surprisingly, it is also great w/ fatty, umami-rich dishes.

PEAR & LEMON, ALMOND, CHAMOMILE & SHERRYISH WAXINESS

Gleamingly golden in the glass, this barrel-aged white is a a powerful and elegant enigma. Combining Tempranillo Blanco (a light skinned mutation of the famous red variety occasionally referred to as Blanca del País) with very ripe Sauvignon Blanc, Viura, and Chardonnay has resulted in a distinctive blend that’s one of a kind yet has the uncanny ability to remind us simultaneously of rich, white Rioja, Fino Sherry, and toast-driven Cali Chard. Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne

APRICOT & SANDALWOOD, VIBRANT & VOLUPTUOUS

Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the undisputed capital of the Southern Rhone. The region’s very name inspires cravings for burgundy-black wines brimming with exoticism. The region’s rare whites, however, are more exotic still and account for less than 10% of the area’s wine. This outstanding offering is robustly redolent yet resplendently refreshing, combining juicy, ripe, golden fruit with a sweet potpourri of flowers, honey, and restrained toast - a golden sunset in the glass.

Serving Suggestion: Seared scallops in a buttery white wine sauce w/ rosemary & garlic. Five-spice roasted butternut squash w/ pine nuts & arugula.

"Les Terres Basses" translates to "the Lowlands", and refers to the shallow calcareous soils on the sunny, pristine expanses of vineyard that sit below the winery at Domaine Laballe. This is a complex and punchy blend of white grapes both esoteric and commonplace. The wine is rich and exotic, but with floating strands of acidity that convey an innate "chuggability."

GINGERED PEACH CUSTARD, BRIGHT & EXOTIC

The soeurs Thibon of Mas de Libian are as thoughtful about naming their wines as they are about creating them. For their single white offering, they play on the "cave canem" ("beware of dog") signs that were discovered in the ruins of Pompeii. Not that there is anything to fear with this delicious Viognier-based blend, 20% of which is fermented in oak before joining with aromatic Roussanne and bright Clairette.

STONEFRUIT & LEMON, SAVORY SALINE SUGGESTION

This unusual combination of Central Italian mainstays (Trebbiano & Vermentino) with a typically more southerly outlier (Fiano) is fresh, fun, and begging for the beach (or seafood companionship). Its origins are an estate humbly boasting 20 years of forward-thinking, organic agriculture (grapes, grains, & olives) and coastal vistas largely unchanged for six centuries. Embracing labor intensive methods among the vines and minimal intervention in the cellar, the castello crafts gems that are astonishingly affordable and inspiringly sincere.

Buil & Gine, Priorat Blanc "Joan Gine", Priorat, Spain, 2017

40% Garnacha Blanca, 36% Macabeo, 20% Viognier, 4% Pedro Ximenez

RIPE MELON & GUANABANA, UNCTUOUS & FRESH

Wine is like a grandfather in many ways. We all think ours is the best. In this case, we're right. As unyielding and characterful as our grandfathers tend to be, the Joan Giné is named for the winemaker's grandfather. The rationale was probably more endearing, but it is a timely personification of the poor, slate/quartz soils of Priorat that fetch the region its fame and fortune. After their vines have sifted through these soils, the juice then wises up for 8 months in new French oak barrels. It's fleshy and juicy with mature layers of tropical fruits, white flowers, and stack stone minerality.

Serving Suggestion: Lobster rolls in the tradition of Maine. Lemon risotto with or without pan-seared scallops and garnished with arugula pesto. Almond-vanilla rice pudding.

Adega M. Cordeiro, "Encosta do Vale Galego" Branco, Tejo, Portugal 2019

{sustainable} 45% Fernão Pires, 35% Arinto, 20% Malvasia

SUBTLE LIME, PRETTY WATERMELON, ELEGANT MINERALITY

Making big reds is the passion of João Cordeiro and his father Manuel, but the quality of their vineyard shines in this white cuvée. It's uncommon to find whites with such elegance hailing from a hot spot like Portugal's Rio Tejo but grapes like Arinto and Fernão Pires are natives of this sunny region and perfectly adapted to retain freshness, even in the face of ever-hotter summers. The limestone soil and hilly site of the Cordeiro vineyard are a luxury in this largely flat riverbed region and give this humble white a delicate minerality. Fun fact: One of the world's largest dinosaur footprint sites was found just a few miles from the vineyard.

Serving Suggestion: Salt cod fritters w/ potato, onion, & garlic. Midsummer tomato sandwich: Fat, in-season, local tomatoes, Duke's mayo (don't skimp), sliced radish, & healthy sprinkling of Maldon salt on a Martin's potato roll... maybe get Iberian and work some anchovies in there too.

JUICY FRUIT, VERY FLORAL, TANGERINE, CITRUS

From the southern reaches of Portugal in the recently renamed Tejo region comes this darling summer sipper and poolside companion dubbed "Samora" after the local Samora Correia area. The estate has just 120 hectares under vine and conscientiously produces what can only be described as some of the absolute best values around. Peach, honeydew melon, tangerine and citrus jump from the glass. Very juicy and bright, every glass is like a bouquet of fresh flowers and golden fruit. Keep bottles chilled at all times for emergency wine drinking situations. A Wine Authorities Exclusive!

{biodynamic} 61% Roussanne, 21% Clairette, 9% Marsanne, 9% Grenache Blanc

HONEYDEW & APRICOT, RUBRUM LILY, SAKE-LIKE WAXINESS

From Ventoux, where the Southern Rhone and Provence collide, this white blend brings together a veritable who’s who of white Rhone varieties. While Viognier remains absent, an intensely tropical assortment of fruit essences leads the way to exotic floral nuances that wouldn’t be out of place in Condrieu. The overall impression, however, is a bit riper and more Mediterranean - both elegant and generously fun. Aureto prides itself on the estate's typical (yet exceptional) terroir, the impressive knack possessed by young vigneron and enologist Aurélie Julien, and the cutting-edge techniques employed in the cellar.

WHITE PEACH & LIME PULP. ZESTY & HAZY, REFRESHING YET RICH

Germany’s Mosel is one of Central Europe’s brightest points, venerably producing some of the most exceptional white wines in the world. With an identity so chiseled, this venerable region might not be our first suspect for cusp-crushing experimentation like Staffelter Hof’s Jan Klein intermittently engages in (in addition to more classically-styled offerings). This hazy, rich yet ultra-refreshing, low-alcohol gem features Riesling and Mueller-Thurgau sharing the spotlight with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat, but the end result is more than the sum of its parts.
