BLACK CHERRY, LIGHT ASH, JUNIPER, A CLASSIC

Cantina Sant' Evasio represents modern winemaking from long standing traditions. The name comes from the chapel on the hill built in the 18th century, later destroyed in WWII. Barbera is their trademark grape and continues to represent outstanding value in today's times. This version from the town of Asti, is a deeply colored, bright red wine showing classic black cherry fruit with light ash, juniper berry and classic flavors.

2019 Barbera d'Asti "Asinoi" [3L Bag-in-Box] (Carussin)

Carussin, Barbera d'Asti "Asinoi" 3 L, Piemonte, Italy 2019

{biodynamic} 100% Barbera

LEATHER & CURRANT, TANGY BALSAMIC WITH A KISS OF FUNK

Matteo and Luca Garberoglio are the genial, laid-back dudes behind the 85 year-old Carussin estate, where they spend their days brewing beer and hanging out with donkeys. Oh, and making incredible wine. This powerful Barbera is an homage to the noble donkey, the raising of which has been a passion for Matteo and Luca's mother Bruna for decades. Mostly complex leathery red fruit reminiscent of a glaze or reduction, the wine gains edge with a tiny hint of tarry earth and subtle barnyardiness. Apropos for a wine named after a donkey.

Serving Suggestion: Juicy burgers with swiss cheese and caramelized onions, pizza with artichoke and hot pepper, game (like venison or boar) in a dark fruit glaze.

2018 Barbera del Monferrato "Giuanin" (Casaccia, La)

La Casaccia, Barbera del Monferrato "Giuanìn", Piemonte, Italy 2018

{organic} 100% Barbera

LUSH BLACKBERRY, SUBTLY PETILLANT, HAZELNUT & FUR

So many of our newer Italian offerings come with a story, and this is no exception. La Casaccia translated roughly to "ruined house" (we originally heard a decisively less kind translation), and Giovanni Rava does apparently go about making his wines in an atmosphere of magisterial decrepitude. There's nothing ramshackle about this beautifully complex and structured Barbera though; it's built like the proverbial brick...uh...wine cellar. Rich threads of blackberry and traditional prickle weave with that great Piemontese woodsy herbalosity to form a solid braid of intoxicating aroma and flavor.

Serving Suggestions: Flank steak sandwich with steak out of the fridge from last night. Whip up some garlic mayo and serve with red onion on a slipper-soft ciabatta. That's a proper builder's lunch.

2019 Colli Tortonesi Rosso (Oltretorrente)

Oltretorrente, Colli Tortonesi Rosso, Veneto, Italy 2019

{organic}

90% Barbera, 10% Dolcetto (co-planted and co-fermented with small amounts of Croatina, Freisa, Slarina, Brachetto & Aleatico)

ZIPPY RASPBERRIES, TONS OF FUN, ELECTRIC!

In 2010, after years of working in larger wineries, Chiara Penati and her husband purchased a tiny, 1.5 hectare vineyard in the hills of Tortona, a little known pocket of the Italian Piedmont. They farm their land organically and make their wine naturally – and only about 2,000 cases a year of it. This Barbera-based field blend, which also includes Dolcetto and several other local red grapes, is fantastically fresh with an exciting energy almost reminiscent of Lambrusco – minus the bubbles.

Serving Suggestion: Porchetta – classic Italian sandwich – slow roasted pork on ciabatta roll w/ peppers & greens. Wood-fired Neopolitan pizza w/ San Marzano tomatoes & Buffalo Mozzarella.

Biodynamically farmed from chalk and clay-based vineyards, this quartet of signature Piemontese grapes gets along splendidly, finding a beautifully balanced combination of generous fruit, herbaceous spice, vibrant acidity, and invigorating tannic texture. TAKE ME TO YOUR LITER!
