2013 Amarone della Valpolicella (Guerrieri-Rizzardi)

Guerrieri-Rizzard, Amarone della Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy, 2013

{organic} 43% Corvina, 31% Corvinone, 16% Rondinella, 10% Barbera

BLACK CHERRY PRESERVES & MISSION FIG, PORT-LIKE INTENSITY

It can be lonely at the top, and Amarone is almost completely unique in the world of dry red wines. Made from the concentrated nectar of half-dried grapes, it accounts for some of the densest, most decadent oenological experiences possible. Clocking in at 16% alcohol (not atypical), this beautiful beast owes its imposing stature and luxurious lushness not only to the Amarone process but to low yields, old vines, and the presence of local but lesser-used powerhouse grape Corvinone. Bellissimo e nerissimo!

Serving Suggestion: Rare, chargrilled sirloin w/ bourbon glaze & roasted sweet potato & kale. Sheep’s milk & blue cheeses w/ pan-seared figs & balsamic reduction.

2017 Amarone della Valpolicella (Corte Majoli)

Corte Majoli, Amarone della Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy 2017

Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella

COLA, LEATHER, BLACK PEPPER, FIGS, RAISINS

An exceptional Amarone value, the Corte Majoli is made using the traditional method of drying the grapes to raisins, then pressing said raisins to extract their sweet goodness. Then it's fermented dry and yields a powerful red with rich aromas and flavors. The alcohol is elevated, as is normal for an Amarone, and the intensity goes to 11 on the 1 to 10 scale. This hearty red shows the fruit of Corvina, but also the classic Italian meaty earth tones typical of classic Amarone.

Serving Suggestions: Hard Reggiano cheese, roast beef with olives and onions, risotto with sausage and Parmesan cheese

2015 Bairrada Tinto Reserva (São Domingos, Caves do Solar de)

Caves do Solar de São Domingos, Bairrada Reserva, Portugal 2015

40% Baga, 30% Touriga Nacional, 30% Tinta Roriz

FIRM PRUNE, WALNUT & LEATHER, SMOKE & EARTH

Baga, a sturdy black grape with firm tannin and a reputation for ageworthiness hasn't perhaps found its way onto the radar of the average American wine lover just yet, but it's nevertheless part of Iberia's dream team of outstanding and exclusive grape varietals. Complex, rustic, and somewhat anachronistic in its untamed, earthy disposition yet in possession of the wisdom and elegance that can only come with maturity, this wine helps us get our Baga fix and offers an ideal introduction to the grape and its northern Portuguese homeland, Bairrada.

Serving Suggestions: Generously marbled skirt steak & broiled potatoes w/ parsley & chives. Burritos w/ black refried beans, puréed sweet potato, garlic, cilantro, & sour cream.

Nicola Vendetti, who is both a farmer and enologist, describes his winemaking approach as a meshing of “the humanity of ancient methods and local varieties, together with the rationality offered by technology.” Italy’s leading publication for food and wine, Gambero Rosso, used the term “organic” for the first time ever in 1988 to describe Vendetti’s vino - a testament to the avant-garde approach of a vineyard that has been in the family for over 400 years.

2017 Bordeaux Blend "Dauntless" (Airfield Estates)

Airfield Estates, Red "Dauntless", Columbia Valley, Washington State 2017

62% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot

BLACK PLUM & REDCURRANT, ROASTED CACAO NIBS & PEPPERCORNS

It’s quite possible that the producers of Washington’s Yakima and Colombia valleys have recognized Merlot’s greatness more than any other wine region of the new world. Here, as in Bordeaux’s Right Bank, it doesn’t play second fiddle to half-brother, Cabernet Sauvignon, and speaking of Bordeaux, this Merlot-piloted blend from Airfield contains each of the variety’s colleagues from its home turf. Even Petit Verdot, which is typically found in the vineyards of the Left Bank makes an appearance, well suited to the hot dry conditions east of the Cascades.

Serving Suggestion: Filet mignon w/ sautéd flat beans & boiled fingerling potatoes w/ chives. Hearty empanadas w/ mole, sweet potato, & tempeh (or dark meat of turkey for a more carnivorous option).

Paolo Petrilli, Cacc'e Mmitte di Lucera "Agramante", Daunia, Puglia, Italy 2017

{Organic} Nero di Troia, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Bombino

DARK RIPE FRUIT & CLAY; TANNIC & BRIGHT; BEAUTIFULLY BALANCED

It's hard to dispute that stony soil makes great wine; it's no wonder that Paolo Petrilli is able to elevate the humble, rustic, and rough Nero di Troia grape to these heights. Not to give all the credit to the earth; Paolo adds a splash of Sangiovese and Montepulciano to soften and round out the wine. Black cherry and pomegranate, a bit of plum, a little white pepper, a dab of wet clay, and a few fallen leaves. “When we started this was a simple, cheap product. I decided to aim for something greater.” Bloody good shot, signore.

Serving Suggestion: Stromboli, filled to bursting w/ mozzarella, provolone piccante, mixed bell peppers, mushrooms, red onions, garlic, & black olives. Or skip the veggies, & layer in finocchiona, Serrano ham, & coppa.

{Organic} Nero di Troia, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Bombino

EARTHY, SPICY, DARK FRUIT & BALANCED TANNIN

Around Lucera, in Italy's Puglian peninsula, there was a communal press, with the understanding that when you pressed your grapes, you would take (cacce) your juice and must at the end of the day, so the next farmer could pour his grapes in (mmitte). And now there's a wine region named after this practice, because why not? It's tradition. Paolo Petrilli's red, based on the local Nero di Troia grape, is earthy, spicy, and tannic, well-balanced with acid, with subtle dark fruit and floral notes. He also grows and jars tomatoes, and grows wheat that he turns into pasta. Because why not? It's tradition.

Serving suggestion: Pizza w/ cherry tomatoes, burrata, olive oil, and whole basil leaves. Penne tossed w/ olive oil, sauteed garlic, broccoli rabe, and caciocavallo cheese.

{organic} 80% Carignan (120+ year old vines), 20% Grenache

PROVENÇAL HERBS, BLACK RASPBERRY, VIOLETS

Wicked old-vine Carignan, like 150 year old, is the base of this Corbieres called Mazerac. Martine Pages uses these ancient vines to great effect, polishing their power with slight aging in small barriques. What comes through is a fantastic expression of Carignan, packed with dried black raspberries, garrigue (rosemary, thyme, lavender), and a slightly smoky earthiness. The inky purple color of this wine is backed up with the essence of violets. Her best vintage in a decade!

Serving Suggestion: All grilled meats. It was also delicious with a salad of fresh frisée topped with sautéed chicken livers and gizzards then drizzled with the pan drippings touched with sherry vinegar.

BARK, SMOKED HERBS, TOASTED SESAME, MEATY

There comes a point for most of us when we reach a plateau. That’s life. They don’t usually come equipped with castles or a stamp from UNESCO however, but, for Martine Pages and her brother Christophe Molinier, it did! Their plateau is called “Bouïs” and it juts out of the Corbières landscape like a ship on open water. In the wake of this jutting rock is a region highly susceptible to drought and brush fires, which, in the world of wine, translates to unabashedly unique juice! Honoring that unique character by fermenting in concrete tanks, the Valensol has us saluting: to plateaus!

Gascony and gastronomy, appropriately, share six letters in common. This southwestern corner of France is home to decadent cheeses, patés, game, and legendary brandy. Its viticulture provides us with outlandishly refreshing whites, or “patio wines” as well as brutish, tannic reds made from Tannat. This Blend of Merlot, Cab Sauv, and the aforementioned Tannat, however, is medium bodied and gentle with ample earthy complexities and food-friendly brightness. A delight!

40% Touriga Nacional, 40% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinto Roriz

FIRM PLUM & DRIED MISSION FIG, WISPS OF CEDAR & VANILLA

Representing a somewhat more modernist slant on the classically dark and elegantly rugged unfortified reds of the Douro valley, Lua Cheia's "Andreza" is named for a particularly stunning bend among the region's otherworldly (and very steep) vineyard-scape. The typical purple-black fruit and mouthfilling majesty are still very much in play, but the stern structure and dusty earthen tones which often populate these wines have been resculpted into something a bit more creamy and cosmopolitan. A delicious twist!

Touriga Franca & Many More

BLACK PLUM & BERRIES. BOLD, RIPE, & DARK. FULL-BODIED

Often as vines grow older, their production of grapes diminishes to the point that growers will rip them out and replant younger, more vigorous ones. The problem is that younger vines rarely produce wines with as much richness and character as the older, more established ones do. This field blend of Touriga Franca and up to twenty two other traditional Douro varieties comes from a vineyard composed entirely of these old and very special vines which haven't been sacrificed in the name of higher yields. Try a bottle and taste the wisdom that comes with age!

The vineyards of Lirac would be almost contiguous with those of Chateauneuf du Pape were they not separated by the Rhone River itself. Long in the shadows of this famous neighbor on the opposite bank as well as the regal, robust rosé flowing from Tavel to the south, Lirac has never been allowed to be one of the Southern Rhone’s most visible stars. That doesn’t stop it from producing wines that  rival (and often, in terms of value, outshine) those of its more famous surroundings. 2019 Rouge, Vaucluse "Le Canebier" (Ligiere, Domaine La)

Domaine La Ligiere, Vaucluse Rouge "Le Canebier", Rhone Valley, France 2019

{biodynamic} 50% Grenache, 50% Syrah

FLESHY BLACK FRUIT, DARK & ROASTY, LAVENDER-LISCIOUS

This newly-named cuvée from Domaine La Ligière is perhaps not as unfamiliar as it first appears. Replacing the “Sud Absolu” Rouge, it continues in that wine’s tradition of championing the often-less lauded Carignan grape. True to form, it exudes the impressive garrigues and dense, dark fruit that we expect from the variety, the Vaucluse department, and Ligière, itself. Tempered by its often better-behaved colleague, Syrah, it's an absolutely beautiful addition to any dinner table.

Serving Suggestions: Juicy brisket rubbed w/ rosemary & thyme. Ratatouille w/ eggplant, tomato, squash, & garlic (or perhaps eggplant parmesan).

{biodynamic) 45% Grenache, 45% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre

RIPE BLACK RASPBERRIES, GARRIGUES. FIRM & FIERCELY PURPLE

Nestled amongst the garrigues surrounded by pine forest, the few acres of Borie la Vitarèle's oldest vines are treated like a private garden employing biodynamic compost made from local plants. Hand-harvesting ensures quality, and the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak. Dark purple, it exudes fresh aromas of ripe raspberries, thyme, and lavender. The generous aromas of black fruit, dark chocolate, and light vanilla oak are utterly seductive.

Serving Suggestion: Leg of lamb roasted slowly w/ garlic & rosemary. Washed rind cheeses w/ chutney; shish kabobs.

2012 Tejo Tinto "Encosta do Vale Galego" 3 Castas (Cordeiro, Adega M.)

Adega M. Cordeiro, "Encosta do Vale Galego" 3 Castas, Tejo, Portugal 2012

{sustainable} 50% Tempranillo/Aragonez/Tinta Roriz, 38% Syrah, 12% Touriga Nacional

DARK FRUIT, DUSTY TANNIN, SUAVE MATURITY, MISSION FIG AND HAZLENUT

Making its first appearance in the United States at Wine Authorities, Encostas do Vale Galego is the family passion project of Manuel Cordeiro and his son João. Manuel’s parents grew grapes, so when he retired he built a small winery behind the family home and bought a promising vineyard to return to that tradition - on a professional scale this time. This 2012 bottling, one of the family’s earliest vintages, is a great example of why Portugal is known for some of the best under the radar wines in Europe; aged lightly in oak and extensively in bottle before release, this wine reaches an apex of mature complexity rare to find in an everyday red.

Serving Suggestion: Spit-roasted suckling pig w/ all the fixin's (make sure to grab a bite of crispy skin). Slow simmered black beans & rice with garlic, onion, & peppers.

2017 Tejo Tinto "Samora" (Lezírias, Companhia das)

Companhia das Lezírias, Tejo Tinto "Samora", Tejo, Portugal 2016

40% Tempranillo, 35% Syrah, 15% Touriga Nacional, 10% Alicante Bouschet

DARK, RICH, SPICY, FULL-FLAVORED, CRUSHED BERRY

From the southern end of Portugal in the newly renamed region of Tejo we have this full flavored, rich red called "Samora" from the Samora Correia area. The estate has just 120 hectares under vine and the grape vines are 20+ years old. All this for so little money- this has got to be one of the best red wine values around. Just three months of barrel aging rounds out the tannins, and gives us a dark, rich red with capable crushed berries just begging to be shared with something from the grill. A Wine Authorities Exclusive!

Serving Suggestion: Burgers off the grill, pork sausages with lots of spice, or meaty textured portabella mushrooms tossed with sun-dried tomato pasta.

2016 Tinto "Assemblage" (Forlong, Bodegas)

Bodega de Forlong, Tinto “Assemblage”, Cadiz, Andalucía, Spain 2016

{organic} 60% Merlot, 30% Tintilla de Rota (Graciano), 10% Syrah (Amphora & oak aged)

DARK BERRIES, LIGHTLY PEPPERY, SUBTLE OAK, IRON & OCEANIC

This lush and approachable red is aged in terra-cotta amphorae and small oak barriques giving it Bordeaux-like flavors. It also, rightly, takes on the terroir of its origin. The Albariza soils of this vineyard give it a fine, spicy minerality, and its location so close to the sea imbues a saline/oceanic hint. It’s a delicious red that can only taste of this place!

Serving Suggestion: Hake cheek topped w/ pickled onions, & mint leaves. Rabbit croquettes. Spicy pork cracklins.

2015 Tinto "Baron Gustav Von Furstenberg" (Sant'Ana, Quinta de)

Quinta de Sant'Ana, Tinto "Baron Gustav Von Furstenberg", Lisboa, Portugal 2015

{sustainable} 58% Merlot, 42% Touriga Nacional

CONCENTRATED BLACK PLUM, ROBUST OAK, COFFEE & HERBS

While Ann and James Frost revolutionized and expanded the vineyards of Sant'Ana at the turning of the millennium, it was Ann's parents of Prussian nobility who established the Quinta decades earlier. Her father's name, "Baron Gustav Von Furstenberg," is a very impressive one to live up to, but this bold red comes through with flying colors. Combining Bordelais native Merlot with Portugese champion Touriga Nacional, this wine plays out like the work of a well-heeled garagiste offering from Bordeaux's Haut-Medoc or Pomerol – unabashedly ambitious and modern. Most impressive! A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Serving Suggestion: Ribs of mutton w/ whiskey sauce, shallots, garlic, & baby asparagus. Tempeh stir fry w/ shiitake, green peppers, garlic, & soy sauce over black rice.

Casa Santos Lima, "Cigarra" Tinto, Lisboa, Portugal 2017

30% Camarate, 30% Castelâo, 30% Touriga Nacional, 10% Trincadera

JUICY RED BERRY & PLUM, SLIGHTLY SPICY, FRESH & SUPPLE

A four-varietal blend showcasing the fresh, juicy appeal of the Camarate and Castelâo grapes, the Cigarra layers comforting dimensions of ripe fruit with spicy aromatic appeal, maintaining a lovely affability without compromising the rich dried berry flavors and mouth filling concentration that we've come to rely on from great Portuguese values. Santos Lima is a continuously operated sixth generation estate which prides itself on its affinity for the many stellar (albeit sometimes internationally obscure) indigenous varietals of Portugal.

Serving Suggestion: Enthusiastically pounded pork cutlets lightly breaded & fried w/ baked okra & boiled potato salad w/ red cabbage. Chourico & sardine pizza w/ onions, tomatoes, garlic & cinnamon.

2018 Tinto Valencia "Bilogia" (Frailes, Casa Los)

Casa Los Frailes, "Bilogia" Tinto, Valencia, Spain 2018

{biodynamic} 50% Monastrell, 50% Syrah

BLUEBERRY & PLUM, BOLD & LUSH. SOFT, TOASTY OAK

Casa Los Frailes, taking its name from the friars which once inhabited the estate, produces wine with the utmost respect for nature and its vineyards. Monastrell, the premier varietal of Spain's southeast, is clearly their first priority. For the Bilogía cuvée, they blend it with its classic blending partner of France, Syrah, grown in Valencia to great results. The outcome is a plump but well-structured wine with soft tannins, supple purple fruit character, and a very tasteful dollop of creamy oak for good measure. This is a suave, plush, and very fun Mediterranean red. A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Serving Suggestions: Majorcan sausage (such as Botifarró with aniseed) and other cured meats (Giacamo's salamis, anyone?). Aged sheep's milk cheeses such as Manchego or Valencia's own Malvarosa.

2019 Valpolicella (Corte Majoli)

Corte Majoli, Valpolicella Classico, Veneto, Italy, 2018

65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella, 5% Molinara

LOGANBERRY & DRIED CASSIS, BRIGHT & BOLD, ELEGANT UNDERBRUSH

A beautifully evocative perfume of forest berries and dried flowers belies the no-frills-ish-ly guzzleable appeal of this bright and very flavorful yet gentle red. Clocking in at a very classical 12% alcohol, this is not quite at the opposite end of the Valpolicella spectrum from the massive (and massively revered) Amarones and Ripassos of the region, but its relatively delicate frame makes it appeal to us by the gallon rather than the carafe...

Serving Suggestion: Roast pork w/ black pepper & dried cranberries or gojis. Triple cream cheese w/ dried mission fig, tart blackberry & pickled beet.

2018 Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso (Corte Majoli)

Corte Majoli, Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso, Veneto, Italy, 2018

65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella, 5% Molinara

BLACK CHERRY & PRUNE, CLOVE, LEATHER & TOASTY OAK

Verona's Valpolicella region is home to several distinct styles including basic Valpolicella, the dried grape version called "Amarone", and the “Ripasso” style featured here (which falls somewhere between) -– all starring the Corvina grape. The technique involved in Ripasso is to first make a regular wine from standard grapes, but in February, dried grapes like the ones used to make Amarone are added to this wine prior to a second fermentation which adds color, depth, and additional flavor to the final wine, resulting something like a super-Valpolicella or fledgling Amarone. Flavors of raisins, cherry, pink peppercorn, and sweet spices prevail. Firm, generous, and full-flavored!

Serving Suggestion: Hearty fare! Strong cheeses like Parmesan or Taleggio. Meaty stews with carrots, prunes, cloves, and potatoes

2018 Veronese Rosso "Campo di Majoli" (Tezza)

Tezza, Campo di Majoli, Veneto, Italy 2018

50% Corvina, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Oseleta

BLACK FRUIT, ENCHANTINGLY RUSTIC SPICE, FIRM & FOOD-FRIENDLY

Ah, here's an interesting wine – an almost classic Valpolicella blend bolstered with a generous injection of Cabernet Sauvignon, and while "Super-Verona" isn't a term bandied about often, we'll help ourselves to it here. Autumnal, firm, and generous, it exudes black cherry, dried roses, pepper, and an exotic spiciness that manages to be vaguely reminiscent of vermouth. No oak has been employed, so the richness and supple texture is derived simply from the ripeness of its grapes, something at which Veronese vignerons are famously adept.

Serving Suggestion: Venison ragu w/ morels & pumpkin fettuccine. Riceberry risotto w/ sheep's milk cheese, shiitakes, & shallots.
