2019 Gruner Veltliner "T26" (Federspiel) (Tegernseerhof)

Tegernseerhof, Gruner Veltliner "T26" Federspiel, Wachau, Austria 2019

{sustainable} 100% Gruner Veltliner

VIBRANT CITRUS & PEACH,  WHITE PEPPER & MINERAL, GRÜNER GOLD

Hailing from the precariously steep inclines of the Wachau’s vineyards, the always-excellent T26 cuvée takes its name from an eventful tasting session with Austrian importer, Klaus Wittauer, who was in the Mittelbach family cellar at their Tegernseerhof winery, searching for his absolute favorite among the estate’s tanks of recently vinified less-expensive Grüner.  When he found the one, he exclaimed, "This is it!  I'll take the whole tank." That tank was #26, and “T26" has sense served as the nickname for the estate’s greatest value outing in Grüner Veltliner each year. Classic stone-fruit and zesty citrus carry notes of the variety’s hallmark white pepper and flint. Prost!

Serving Suggestion: Juicy fried or oven-roasted chicken w/ crisp skin. Wiener Schnitzel or other breaded, fried cutlets. Mild, flavorful cheeses.

2019 Gruner Veltliner Weinviertel (Minkowitsch, Roland)

Ronald Minkowitsch, Gruner Veltliner, Weinvertel, Austria 2017

{organic} 100% Gruner Veltliner

ZESTY! LITHE CITRUS & PEACH, WHITE PEPPER & GOOSEBERRY

Northeastern Austria’s Weinviertel (translating to “wine quarter”) is the Central European nation’s largest area of wine production, in fact accounting for half of all acreage planted to Grüner Veltliner. This offering from Martin Minkowitsch (representing the 15th generation of the estate) is classic for the massive, Slovakia & Czech-bordering DAC, brimming with restrained citrus & stone fruit, an almost arugula-like pepperiness, and unexpected gooseberry undercurrents that may gently recall Sauvignon Blanc.

Serving Suggestion: Open-faced sandwich of smoked salmon & Emmental on rye w/ quail egg, parsley, & alfalfa sprouts. Cucumber salad w/ dill, white wine vinegar, olive oil, & black pepper.

ZESTY LIME & FRAGRANT PEACH, CHISELED MINERALITY, ELEGANT

2016 Grüner Veltliner Neuberg Kamptal Reserve (Edelbauer, Christoph)

Christoph Edelbauer, Grüner Veltliner Neuberg Reserve, Kamptal, Austria 2016 {organic}

100% Gruner Veltliner

ASIAN PEAR & WHITE PEACH, FANTASTIC FLINT, MAGNOLIA

"Radiant! With lots of flavor, strength, and passion. Loves autumn and good food." This suave rendition of Austria’s graceful Grüner grape from Kamptal maestro, Cristophe Edelbauer, does a splendid job of both channeling distinctly Veltliner-riffic varietal character and coaxing out its rounder, more Burgundian-esque possibilities with plentiful tree fruit and an interestingly herbal element reminiscent of parsley and sage. Resoundingly opulent, its appeal perhaps owes more to richness and roundness than to refreshment or raciness. Indulge! Indulge!

Serving Suggestion: Grilled pike or salmon w/ a savory sage-butter sauce & asparagus. Roast cornish hen w/ green peppercorns, parsley & broccolini w/ a squeeze of lemon.

2011 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Bergdistel" (Tegernseerhof)

Tegernseerhof, Gruner Veltliner "Bergdistel" Wachau, Austria 2011

100% Gruner Veltliner

RIPE NECTARINE & RACY CITRUS, ZESTY MINERAL, TOASTED SESEME

Harvested at the lower reaches of the steeply sloping (and, typically, steeply-priced) Loibenberg and Weissenkirchen vineyards, this distinctly golden, ripe, fuller-figured rendition of Austria's signature grape offers further evidence that good things do indeed come to those who wait - doubly - as rising star Martin Mittelbach waited for stellar ripeness in order to coax decadence and concentration, and we, the wine drinkers, have waited a decade to enjoy (or revisit) the fabulous 2011 vintage. Brimming with intense stone fruit, citrus, and peppery mineral, this colorful gem more than satisfies our pinings for both power and elegance.

Serving Suggestion: Chicken-fried shrimp w/ coarsely-chopped slaw & pickled red onions. Savory fried kimchi pancake.

2019 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Bergdistel" (Tegernseerhof)

Tegernseerhof, Gruner Veltliner "Bergdistel" Wachau, Austria 2019

100% Gruner Veltliner

KEY LIME & CRISP GOLDEN PLUM, PIERCING MINERALITY

The Bergdistel vineyard site exists at lower reaches of the imposingly steep sloping Loibenberg and Weissenkirchen vineyards. It happens to be the source of one of the most tremendous values in the esteemed Wachau phenomenon known as “Smaragd” - a celebration of ripeness, power, impeccable balance, and finesse named for the region's beautiful emerald green lizards. 2019 was an impressively warm vintage, resulting in an even more muscular rendition of this already intense cuvée. Brimming with intense stone fruit, citrus, and peppery mineral, this colorful gem is sure to satisfy our pinings for both power and elegance.

Serving Suggestion: Tea-smoked duck & kung pao lotus root. Crispy fried potato pancakes w/ cashew-lemon sour cream.

2017 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Höhereck" (Tegernseerhof)

Tegernseerhof, Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Hohereck", Wachau, Austria 2017

100% Gruner Veltliner

GOLDEN STONE FRUIT & KOREAN PEAR, FULL-BODIED, RACY & DRY

The coveted title of pedigree, “Smaragd,” is inspired by the emerald pigmentation of the strikingly beautiful lacertid lizards which can be spotted basking on stones throughout the steep vineyards of the Wachau. This legal distinction is reserved for wines made from the ripest, richest grapes in this revered region. Martin Mittelbach’s Höhereck vineyard, itself, is barely an acre in size and was laid out carefully by his family in the 1960s. Its 60 year Grüner vines yield liquid gold...

Serving Suggestion: Brodet (Croatian seafood stew) w/ yellowfin, rockfish, mussels, & prawns – served w/ polenta. Pad Thai w/ crispy fried tofu.

2017 Riesling Smaragd "Bergdistel" (Tegernseerhof)

Tegernseerhof, Riesling "Bergdistel" Wachau, Austria 2017

100% Riesling

RIPE LIME & PINEAPPLE, SUAVE MINERAL, RACY YET RICH

Austria’s Wachau, unlike Germany’s Rheingau, cannot claim to be the cradle of Riesling’s (likely medieval) origins, but it certainly can and does offer friendly yet fierce competition as the site of the variety’s absolute zenith. Imposingly steep, terraced vineyards are stony and sun-soaked guaranteeing impressive ripeness (here in one of Austria’s coolest viticultural climates) while gneiss soils further bolster acidity. Most would agree that Smaragd classé like this represent Austria’s crème de la crème, but subjectivity aside, these are the elites of the elite. Wachau and Martin Mittelbach’s Tegernseerhof seems to revel in not only meeting and exceeding expectations but doing so without climbing into the catastrophic price ranges of his colleagues and competitors. Utopie!

Serving Suggestion: Smoked trout schnitzel w/ caper-mustard cream sauce & lemony white asparagus w/ marinated artichoke hearts. Szechuan salt & pepper squid & pickled lotus root.
