From one of only a few remaining farms in the hands of a family from Panzano, in the heart of the “black rooster” Chianti Classico zone comes classic example, that is both pretty and serious, with the typical flavors of dried fruit, cured meat and earth. Aged shortly in old oak barrels to mellow and meld the flavors, it’s capable of conjuring Tuscan memories from events you may have never experienced. Contemplative.

Serving Suggestion: Veal chop w/ sage, garlic, white beans, drizzled w/ olive oil. Pasta Pomodoro.

Talk about a wine from a farmer. Riccardo Lanza spends as much time in the fields (and out of the cellar) as he possibly can, because that’s where the real work is done. This is pure Sangiovese Chianti from well-loved vines, redolent of the surrounding forest and full of tarry, leathery earth. Classic and absolutely delicious.

Serving Suggestions: Veal Parmesan, lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs. Meat sauce, basically.

The Tuscan region of Morellino di Scansano has been making wine for more than a century. It became a DOC in 1978 and a DOCG in 2006, yet most Americans have never heard of this wonderful red wine. Full-flavored and busting out at the Tuscan seams, this Morellino is more modern in style. No oak to be found, this juicy red is all tank fermented and bottle aged, ripe, lush and ready to drink.

Quercus Ilex is the holly oak, found plentifully at the Caprili winery and a symbol of Montalcino. Firmly structured, exuding youthful black fruit, and earthy, this wine is made from Sangiovese Grosso, a famed local clone of Brunello. While this minimally-aged outing isn’t likely to be mistaken for Brunello, it’s still impressive stuff. Grown organically and vinified utilizing only ambient and indigenous yeasts, this a fantastic value. Pair it with all kinds of Italian cuisine.

Serving Suggestion: Lamb ragu w/ mushrooms & sun-dried tomatoes. Eggplant-stuffed portobello mushrooms w/ garlic, basil & parmesan. Lasagna.
