2019 Ribera del Duero Tinto Roble "Montecastrillo" (Torremilanos, Finca)

Finca Torremilanos, Ribera del Duero Tinto "Montecastrillo", Ribera del Duero, Spain, 2019

100% Tempranillo {biodynamic}

BLACK CHERRY & BOYSENBERRY, SANDALWOOD & TOBACCO

Northern-central Spain’s Ribera del Duero has a well-earned reputation regarding its outstanding Tempranillo-based reds, but we tend to be impressed with sturdiness that its wines exemplify rather than how easy they are on the wallet. This righteous rendition, however, manages to muster the concentration that we crave and expect in an affably juicy, less tannic package that doesn’t break the bank. Four months time in French oak barrels seals the deal with supple, cedary spice!

Serving Suggestion: Empanadas w/ ground beaf, lentils, & creamy corn. Grilled flatbread w/ caramelized onions & manchego.

2016 Rioja Crianza "Olagosa" (Perica, Bodegas)

Bodegas Perica, "Olagosa" Crianza, Rioja, Spain 2016

88% Tempranillo, 8% Garnacha, 4% Mazuelo

SOFT CINNAMON, LUSH BAKED BLACKBERRY, TOASTY FINISH

David Garcia, aka "Perica" a nickname from his grandpa, is responsible for maintaining old Rioja traditions and keeping his family estate at the peak of Rioja quality. This is the oldest family-run Bodega in San Asensio and we love all their wines. With the rich Tempranillo this vintage, he still coaxes Pinot Noir-like elegance, and adds the complexity of Garnacha and Mazuelo. This Crianza (aged) Rioja struts its stuff from the moment you open the bottle. Traditional American oak used.

Serving Suggestion: Great with pork tenderloin marinated in garlic, scallions, olive oil and smoky Spanish paprika, then grilled medium rare.

2010 Rioja Gran Reserva (Perica, Bodegas)

Bodegas Perica, "Viña Olagosa" Gran Reserva, Rioja, Spain 2010

Mostly Tempranillo, with a little Garnacha and Mazuelo

SPICE, CLOVE, TOASTY OAK, RIPE CHERRY FRUIT

Located in San Asensio, Rioja Alta, Bodegas Perica still embraces the charm and elegance of cellar aged Spanish wine. This Gran Reserva is their current release at the young age of 9 years old. Sourced from their top vineyards in La Rioja Alta, the hand picked grape clusters are fermented in large French oak vats, then transferred to French oak barrels for 28 months of aging before going to sleep in bottle waiting years for release. The result is simply wine magic. Traditional in style, but most pleasing to the modern day, fruit-driven wine drinker, this Gran Reserva is grand for such a modest price.

Serving Suggestion: Braised pork belly with mushrooms, cippolini onions and a cinnamon stick, or grilled hot Italian sausages with roasted potatoes and rosemary.

2009 Rioja Reserva "Vina Bosconia" (Lopez de Heredia)

Lopez de Heredia, Vina Bosconia Reserva, Rioja, Spain 2009

80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha (Grenache), 2% Mazuelo (Carignan), 3% Graciano

SILKY TANNIN WRAPPED IN VANILLA & CEDAR, ROUND

Lopez de Heredia is one of our wine heroes. Maintaining the classic, traditional style of Rioja, this is a perfect example of the benefits of working with special grape selections, natural yeasts, long-term oak aging, and bottling without filtration. Everything is done by hand, additive-free, and with great attention to detail. The vanilla spice is wrapped around birch, tobacco, and melon rind, with strawberry, earth, and a hint of smoke on the finish.

Serving Suggestion: Charcuterie of jamón, Manchego, & Idiazabal. Celery root & mushroom lasagna. Filet mignon w/ bacon-wrapped asparagus.

2012 Rioja Reserva "Viña Olagosa" (Perica, Bodegas)

Bodegas Perica, "Viña Olagosa" Reserva, Rioja, Spain 2012

88% Tempranillo, 8% Garnacha, 4% Mazuelo

VANILLA, SPICES, DUSTY STRAWBERRY, DRIED CITRUS, LEATHER

From Bodegas Perica's single vineyard "Olagosa", comes this classic Rioja Reserva, relentlessly traditional. Made in the same style, from the same vineyard for more than 50 years, this wine is a step into the past. Spicy, toasty flavors abound, this wine spent two years in oak barrels before aging in their cellar another four. The dried berry and earth flavors have great complexity especially when that whiff of leather comes through. Vive España!

Serving Suggestions: Although it is much spicier than a Pinot Noir, we recommend trying this with similar matches; Salmon, pork, veal, roast poultry with earthy veggies.

2017 Rioja Tinto "6 Cepas" (Perica, Bodegas)

Bodegas Perica, "6 Cepas" Rioja Tinto, La Rioja, Spain 2016

100% Tempranillo

BLACK FRUIT & SPICE, SOFT TANNINS, TOUCH OF TOASTY OAK

Now in their third generation, Bodegas Perica once again delivers stellar Rioja at an even better value. With the “6 Cepas” series, the García family sought to showcase the ever-malleable Tempranillo grape in a younger and fresher form. Unlike in their single vineyard Olagosa series, this project includes six different plots in Rioja Alta—hence the name 6 Cepas. Signature dark fruit can be found throughout, while the time in new French oak softens the tannins and accentuates the wine’s spicy nature. Distinctly Rioja while being uncommonly crushable.

Serving Suggestions: Thinly sliced Serrano ham, a wedge of Manchego, Manzanilla olives, Marcona almonds, & a fresh baguette.
