"Colección" represents the culmination of decades of history for the Peñalba Lopez family in Ribera del Duero. Winemaker Ricardo Peñalba Lopez selects the best plots of biodynamically farmed Tempranillo on the property to make this flagship wine. The vines average 100 years old, and the wine is destined to spend two and a half years in French oak, picking up rich, roasty vanilla notes followed by several more years mellowing perfectly in bottle before Ricardo deems it ready for release.

This righteous rendition, however, manages to muster the concentration that we crave and expect in an affably juicy, less tannic package that doesn’t break the bank. Four months time in French oak barrels seals the deal with supple, cedary spice!

With the rich Tempranillo this vintage, he still coaxes Pinot Noir-like elegance, and adds the complexity of Garnacha and Mazuelo. This Crianza (aged) Rioja struts its stuff from the moment you open the bottle. Traditional American oak used.

Serving Suggestion: Great with pork tenderloin marinated in garlic, scallions, olive oil and smoky Spanish paprika, then grilled medium rare.

Located in San Asensio, Rioja Alta, Bodegas Perica still embraces the charm and elegance of cellar aged Spanish wine. This Gran Reserva is their current release at the young age of 9 years old. Sourced from their top vineyards in La Rioja Alta, the hand picked grape clusters are fermented in large French oak vats, then transferred to French oak barrels for 28 months of aging before going to sleep in bottle waiting years for release. The result is simply wine magic. Traditional in style, but most pleasing to the modern day, fruit-driven wine drinker, this Gran Reserva is grand for such a modest price.

Serving Suggestion: Braised pork belly with mushrooms, cippolini onions and a cinnamon stick, or grilled hot Italian sausages with roasted potatoes and rosemary.

Located in Haro, the capital city of La Rioja Alta, Lopez de Heredia is one of our world wine heros. Keeping very traditional and maintaining the classic style of Rioja of old, the single vineyard Bosconia is a perfect example of working with special grape selections, natural yeasts, long term oak aging and bottling without filtration. Everything is done by hand, chemical free and with great attention to detail and tradition. The vanilla spice is wrapped around birch, dried cherry and melon rind with strawberry and earth. A whisp of smoke comes through on the finish.

Serving Suggestion: A wine that will enhance anything it touches - try with grouper fajitas, anything jamon (pork) and chicken roasted with orange peel and thyme

From Bodegas Perica's single vineyard "Olagosa", comes this classic Rioja Reserva, relentlessly traditional. Made in the same style, from the same vineyard for more than 50 years, this wine is a step into the past. Spicy, toasty flavors abound, this wine spent two years in oak barrels before aging in their cellar another four. The dried berry and earth flavors have great complexity especially when that whiff of leather comes through. Vive España!

Serving Suggestions: Although it is much spicier than a Pinot Noir, we recommend trying this with similar matches; Salmon, pork, veal, roast poultry with earthy veggies.

Father Manuel retired from his office job and wanted to return to the vineyard and winemaking life his relatives had grown up with. Now he and son João have revitalized an old vineyard at the foot of the beautiful Serra d'Aire, a 2000 foot tall limestone massif that towers over the flat riverbed of the Tejo. The backbone of this deceptively easy drinker is Tempranillo (which the Portugese call Aragonez or Tinta Roriz) while local specialty Castelão adds freshness, and a dash each of Syrah and Touriga Nacional brings a touch more rich, dark fruit.
