Condrieu’s granite slopes overlooking the town of Ampuis and the Rhone River are Viognier’s home turf, and it’s here that the grape does its most revered work. Intensely characterful, with poignant peach, floral, and tropical perfumes, the variety can border on overblown when grown in hotter climates or allowed to become overripe, but, like the greatest examples of Condrieu, this offering magnificently maintains its freshness with lively acidity, well-defined fruit, and a modern yet moderate 13.5% abv. Voila! C’est Viognier!

Serving Suggestion: Butter-poached, broiled monkfish (lobster is the classic pairing) w/ fresh, sweet tomato halves & basil. Pad Thai w/ fried tofu, cashews, & beansprouts.

This New World offering is hand-picked at the highest point in the vineyards where it benefits from the Pacific breezes. The result is a crisp, floral, dry wine with medium body and acidity and the tell-tale aromas of honeysuckle, peach, flavors of orange zest and white pepper.

Saint-Joseph’s Domaine Barou finds its ten hectares at the northernmost extreme of the vertically sprawling appellation – at the southern crossroads with Condrieu, the majestic birthplace of Viognier. It’s no surprise that the estate owns land in Condrieu and that it also works with the fashionable yet somewhat elusive variety in the non-AOP countryside…to excellent effect. Swelling with the rich, ripe, exotic fruit and floral intensity that are Viognier’s claim to fame, this Condrieu understudy is distinctive, memorable, and a real treat.
