2015 Orleans Clery Rouge (Clos Saint Fiacre)

Clos Saint Fiacre, Orleans Clery Rouge, Loire Valley, France 2015

{sustainable} 100% Cabernet Franc

BRIGHT BLACK FRUIT, SILKY TANNINS, SOFT SPICE

Cabernet Franc is king when it comes to Loire Valley reds. The relatively new Orléans-Clery appellation looks to build on that tradition, even if it's well northeast of the other Cabernet Franc dominated regions. The secret to achieving proper ripeness this far north is sandy soil, which traps heat and provides drainage in the cold, wet Upper Loire. Bénédicte Montigny-Piel and her husband Hubert Piel deliver us a cuvée full of fresh plums and raspberries, a smattering of black pepper on the palate, with a silky smooth long finish.

Serving Suggestions: A versatile pick! Braised venison w/ rich, mushroom sauce. With a slight chill, would be lovely alongside simple grilled vegetables & mushrooms tossed in EVOO/herb mix.

2015 Orleans Rouge (Clos Saint Fiacre)

Clos Saint Fiacre, Orleans Rouge, Loire Valley, France 2015

{sustainable} 80% Pinot Meunier, 20% Pinot Noir

BLACK CHERRY & CASSIS, HERBACIOUS SPICE, FIRM & GENEROUS

Hailing from the very northerly and rather rare Loire appellation known as Orléans, this is a Pinot Noir double feature starring the Meunier mutation best known for its work in Champagne with support from the more familiar regular Pinot Noir (sans Meunier’s downy leaves). The result is bright and firm yet appealingly ripe and generous with familiarly Pinot-ish cherry fruit and a spicy herbaceousness (including a whisper of juniper) that lies somewhere between Oregon Pinot and Loire Cab Franc. Captivating!

Serving Suggestions: Pumpernickel crostini w/ venison or bison tartare. Baked brie w/ toasted pecans, rosemary, & lingonberry preserves.
