2020 Alvarinho Superior (Socalcos do Bouro (Corina Maria Pereira Antunes Almeida))

Socalos do Douro, Alvarinho Superior, Vinho Verde (Minho), Portugal 2020

{organic} 100% Alvarinho (Albariño)

PINEAPPLE & PEAR, CITRUSY MINERAL ZEST, KISS O' BANANA

Albariño can still be your favorite Spanish white, but it originates just south of the border in Portugal’s Minho (the Vinho Verde region). Alvarinho, as it is known here, is partially responsible for the fresh, fizzy stuff that that we associate with the region’s best-known wines, but it can also be resplendently restrained and mineralistic or fleshy, full-bodied, and brimming with tropical assertiveness. This offering luxuriously leans toward the latter option.

Serving Suggestion: Citrus-marinated grilled squid tacos. Pineapple-anchovie pizza w/ diced crimini mushrooms & ricotta – gifts from the sea & from the forest...

2020 Loureiro (Socalcos do Bouro (Corina Maria Pereira Antunes Almeida))

Socalos do Bouro, Loureiro, Vinho Verde, Portugal 2020

{organic} 100% Loureiro

PASSIONFRUIT & YUZU, CRISP & EXHILARATING, ELIXIR-ESQUE

The Loureiro grape is a native of northern Portugal’s Minho (aka the Vinho Verde region), and, while its name is certainly not a household one, the variety has graced the lips of many wine lovers. This enchantingly radiant rendition combines an intense tropicality with elegant mineralistic flourishes and an appropriately delicate herbal quality (its name does mean “laurel,” after all) that recalls its cool-climated, hilly origins – reminiscent of springtime Appalachia.

Serving Suggestion: Bay leaf-grilled trout w/ mango salsa. Jamaican tempeh turnovers w/ Vidalia, cumin, & mustard seed.

INKY, SPICY RASPBERRY, DARK BUT FRESH

The Vinho Verde district is internationally beloved for fresh whites, but the locals love their inky reds... so much so that they are rarely exported. These wines are so dark that they're traditionally served not in glassware but in white ceramic bowls, to highlight this color. Don't let your eyes deceive you though, this opaque red is far from heavy. Victor Goncalves selects this reserve bottling from his best Vinhao vines in his tiny, 5ha hillside vineyard in verdant northern Portugal.

Serving suggestion: Victor served this w/ a home-cured leg of wild boar his brother-in-law hunted. Otherwise, a nice charcuterie board w/ sharp cheeses, serrano ham & spicy lomo will suffice.
