2019 Garnacha Tintorera “Rubificado” (Frailes, Casa Los)

Casa Los Frailes, Garnacha Tintorera “Rubificado”, Valencia, Spain 2019

[biodynamic] 100% Alicante Bouschet (Garnacha Tintorera)

SLOE BERRY, RASPBERRY, BLACK PEPPER, INDIA INK, CITRUS

This single parcel wine is from a vineyard site called “La Casa de Aperos” (House of Tools). Here the black juiced Tintorera grape brings juicy brightness from a soil deeply reddened by natural oxidized iron deposits. Following the heritage of the monastery that originally planted this vineyard, this wine is made using their original 13th century fermentation amphorae.

Serving Suggestion:  Whole hog pork cooked slowly over a wood fire. Instead of any barbecue sauce, lightly spritz with lemon juice and sprinkle with sea salt.

2015 Monastrell Viñas Viejas "1771" (Frailes, Casa Los)

Casa Los Frailes, Monastrell Viñas Viejas "1711", Valencia, Spain 2015

{biodynamic} Monastrell

BLACK CHERRY, IRON & FOREST BARK, SANDALWOOD & VIOLET

No, that's not the vintage! This old-vine cuvée “1771" from Casa Los Frailes is a palate-pleasing palindrome which takes its name from the year that the estate’s Valásquez family assumed control during the Enlightenment of what had formerly been the vineyards and monastery of local friars prior to the Inquisition. Southeastern Spain is the origin of the magnificent Monastrell grape (aka Mourvèdre), and this pure version brims with the brooding power that the variety is famous for while projecting its potential elegance with velvety, mature tannin, supple fruit, and soft oak that evokes wisps of exotic sandalwood.

Serving Suggestions: Dry-aged steak w/ roasted red peppers & shallots. Cured morcilla. Creamy baked Portobello/rice casserole w/ sherry sauce.
