2018 Cotes du Rhone Villages "Laudun" (Marjolet, Chateau de)

Chateau de Marjolet, Cotes-Du-Rhone Villages "Laudun", Southern Rhone, France 2018

{organic} 70% Grenache, 30% Syrah

BLACK RASPBERRY & CASSIS, SPICE & WHITE PEPPER, SWEET EARTH

Like the best producers of the southern Rhone Valley, Chateau de Marjolet crafts wines which are deft performers of a balancing act, finding that middle ground between power and finesse. This red from the village of Laudun brings a restrained clarity of dark fruit together with hedonistic pepper, spice, and a satisfying earthy richness which is exotic, elegant, and unmistakably Mediterranean. The Pontaud family, champions of terroir-driven wines and environmentally sound viticulture, have here brought to life the perfect Chateauneuf-du-Pape understudy.

Serving Suggestion: Lamb or beef w/ prunes and olives braised slowly in red wine and served with mashed potatoes. Punjabi curry w/ puréed tomatoes, cinnamon, & black cardamom.

2020 Cotes-du-Rhone Rose (Marjolet, Chateau de)

Chateau de Marjolet, Côtes-Du-Rhône Rose, Southern Rhone, France 2020

60% Cinsault, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah

STRAWBERRY & RED RASPBERRY, ROBUST & REFRESHING

Laudun is, perhaps, a lesser-known corner of the Southern Rhône’s right bank, but its proximity to Chateauneuf-du-Pape (on the river’s opposite bank) and, more relevantly, Tavel to its south is telling, and the quality offered by its stony terroir is exceptional. This robust rosé isn’t quite as dense (or dark) as those of the aforementioned Tavel, but its enthusiastic ripeness is reminiscent, and its Cinsault-dominated composition imbues it with wonderful brightness, lively acidity, and impeccable balance.

Serving Suggestions: Oven-roasted Spanish mackerel w/ dill, coriander, & tabouleh w/ briny olives & grape tomatoes. Fresh figs & creamy goat’s milk cheeses (perhaps w/ lavender & fennel).
