2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mas Codina)

Mas Codina, Cabernet Sauvignon "CS", Penedes, Spain 2017

Cabernet Sauvignon

RIPE & SPICY. BLACK CHERRY & CURRANT. TASTY!

Toni Garriga is a man on a mission. His family has made wine here in the mountains of Penedes for nearly 400 years, but rarely from their own grapes. Beginning in 1985, he decided to focus exclusively on "estate wine," wine made only from the grapes he grows. With great pride he presented us with this Cabernet, spicy and lush with lovely black cherry fruit. He ages it in small French oak barriques for 12 months before bottling to soften it and add complexity. Thanks Toni for this tasty treat!

Serving Suggestions: Pan-grilled Beef Tenderloin over fois gras in a Pedro Ximenez reduction.

2017 Cava Brut Nature Reserva (Mas Codina)

Mas Codina, Cava Brut Nature Reserva, Penedes, Spain 2017

50% Macabeu, 35% Xarel-lo, 10% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Noir

VERY DRY, BRIGHT, JUICY & FRESH. LEMON & MINERAL, BUT ACCESSIBLE

From the Alt Penedes region of Catalonia, which is the highest elevation region where fine Cava is made, comes this serious but fun (serious fun!?!) Brut Nature. These are the driest of all sparkling wines. Toni Garriga spent the afternoon walking me around his vineyard planted by his family in the 1600's, tasting in his cellars and introducing me to his wife and dog. Nice guy, brilliant wines, amazing history!

Serving suggestions: Trout with caper butter. Moules Frites. Oysters Rockefeller.

2019 Penedès Negre (Mas Codina)

Mas Codina, Penedès Negre, Penedes, Spain 2019

{organic} 40% Merlot, 33% Pinot Noir, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon

PLUM & CASSIS, GRAPHITE-LIKE MINERALITY, ENERGETIC

Not quite a joven alternative to Mas Codina’s always beautiful Cabernet cuvée, this youthfully assertive gem is aged in oak for three months – just long enough to enhance an impression of polish or finesse without compromising its vitality. Penedès is best known as Cava country, but like Tarragona to its north, has a longstanding love affair with Bordelais varieties, and both Cabernet and Merlot do outstanding work here. Txin txin!

Serving Suggestion: Kosher Coney Island hot dog. Catalan pizza w/ zucchini, pine nuts, capsicum, & sun-dried tomato.

2018 Xarel-lo (Mas Codina)

Mas Codina, Xarel-lo, Penedes, Spain 2018

{organic}

100% Xarel-lo

PINEAPPLE & HONEYDEW, FENNEL & MEDITERRANEAN MINERALITY

Xarel-lo is Cava’s not-so-secret weapon, typically occupying relatively small percentages of the northeastern Spanish sparklers yet infusing them with the lion’s share of their exotic undercurrents. This very special, non-bubbly rendition from Mas Codina showcases the variety’s intrinsic topicality, spice, and power in a full-figured package complete with zesty acidity which engages the brakes before unctuousness is reached. File next to Vouvray Sec.

Serving suggestion: Escalivada (grilled peppers, eggplant, & tomatoes) w/ anchovies on flatbread w/ aioli.
