2013 Amarone della Valpolicella (Guerrieri-Rizzardi)

Guerrieri-Rizzard, Amarone della Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy, 2013

{organic} 43% Corvina, 31% Corvinone, 16% Rondinella, 10% Barbera

BLACK CHERRY PRESERVES & MISSION FIG, PORT-LIKE INTENSITY

It can be lonely at the top, and Amarone is almost completely unique in the world of dry red wines. Made from the concentrated nectar of half-dried grapes, it accounts for some of the densest, most decadent oenological experiences possible. Clocking in at 16% alcohol (not atypical), this beautiful beast owes its imposing stature and luxurious lushness not only to the Amarone process but to low yields, old vines, and the presence of local but lesser-used powerhouse grape Corvinone. Bellissimo e nerissimo!

Serving Suggestion: Rare, chargrilled sirloin w/ bourbon glaze & roasted sweet potato & kale. Sheep’s milk & blue cheeses w/ pan-seared figs & balsamic reduction.

2020 Bardolino Chiaretto Classico "Keya" (Guerrieri-Rizzardi)

Guerrieri Rizzardi, Bardolino Chiaretto Classico "Keya", Veneto, Italy 2020

{organic} 65% Corvina, 15% Rondinella, 20% Sangiovese and Merlot

ZESTY RED BERRY. BLOSSOMS & CITRUS. JUICY & FRESH

Guerrieri-Rizzardi’s “Keya,” short for Chiaretto, bears a surprisingly playful name from an estate (or pair of 1600s estates that merged through marriage just over a century ago) with a history as rich as this one’s, but maybe it should’t be surprising considering the solar-powered, forward-thinking winery’s current incarnation. The rosé, itself, is every bit as playful, bursting with snappy, ripe raspberry & cherryish red fruit, assertively floral aromas, and a finish that delightfully manages to recall watermelon Bubble Yum…yum!!!

Serving Suggestion: General Tso-esque chicken thighs w/ hoisin sauce & Korean red chili flakes w/ thin yuzu-infused sesame seed asparagus. Red radicchio risotto w/ white wine & parmesan.

2019 Bardolino Classico (Guerrieri-Rizzardi)

Guerrieri Rizzardi, Bardolino Classico "Cuvee XV", Veneto, Italy 2019

{sustainable} 60% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, with Merlot, Ancellota and Sangiovese as well

PLUM, CHERRY, PENCIL BOX, BLACK PEPPER. SUPPLE & SAVORY.

While the neighboring Valpolicella region gets all the glory, Bardolino has been quietly chugging away at value wines for decades. It was only a matter of time before gold star vinaioli (winegrowers) like Guerrieri Rizzardi began pushing the quality envelope and started making fantastic quality wines in this area. Bolla is bollocks; this will make you want to kiss your fingertips.

Serving Suggestion: Best friends with any charcuterie plate! Tagliatelle or pappardelle w/ “tastasal” a pork ragu. Gnocchi w/ tomato, onions, & Veronese cheese.

2019 Soave Classico (Guerrieri-Rizzardi)

Guerrieri-Rizzardi, Soave Classico, Veneto, Italy, 2019

Mostly Garganega a dash of Chardonnay and Verdicchio

GREEN APPLE & PEAR, LIGHTLY FLORAL, LIMESTONE MINERALITY

Like other great Italian wines, Soave is fighting back against its popularity, a victim of that most sincere form of flattery - imitation. This is the real deal, grown in two of the best vineyard sites in Soave. Rizzardi produces a rich, classic Soave: subtle in its aromas, evocative of yellow pears and crisp green apples, a slice of cantaloupe, a bouquet of spring flowers, and fresh rain. This is a Soave to take back its good name from the bottom shelf of the grocery store, climb to the top of the Castle of Soave (yes, it's a real place, and it overlooks these vineyards): Ricco Soave!

Serving suggestions: Pancakes & eggs. Fish/shellfish (frutti di mare!), lobster risotto w/ asparagus. As an aperitivo.

2016 Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso "Pojega" (Guerrieri-Rizzardi)

Guerrieri-Rizzard, Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso Classico "Pojega", Veneto, Italy, 2016

{organic} 50% Corvinone, 30% Corvina, 10% Rondinella, & 10% Merlot

CURRANT & BLACK CHERRY, PEPPERY & PIQUANT, TOASTED CHESTNUT

Famously utilizing the skins from the partially-dried grapes responsible for the Valpolicella region’s Amarones, the Veronese specialty known as Ripasso comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. This one from the micro-production maestros of Rizzardi is simultaneously lithe and lavish with peppery spice, firm fruit, and a year of aging in French and Savonian oak. An unusually high percentage of the coveted Corvinone grape is also of keen interest!

Serving Suggestion: Cranberry-glazed ham w/ clove & cinnamon. Tortellini w/ broad beans & pecorino.
