2019 Alvarinho "Contacto" (Mendes, Anselmo)

Anselmo Mendes, "Contacto" Alvarinho,

Vinho Verde, Portugal, 2019

100% Alvarinho (Albariño)

HONEYSUCKLE, APRICOT, GRANITIC MINERALITY, DRY & RACY

Winemaker Anselmo Mendes, a native of Monção in northwest Portugal, is passionate about both his vineyards and the native varietals which inhabit them. He shares with the world's most conscientious vignerons the important tenet that quality wine is created first and foremost in the vineyard, marrying each grape variety he cultivates with the section of land which best compliments it. His Alvarinho is a remarkably complex wine with focused mineral, elegantly lean fruit, and the sort of unrelenting acidity which makes it particularly well suited for fresh seafood.

Serving Suggestion: Sardinhas assadas (chargrilled sardines) with olive oil, sea salt, black pepper, and shallots. Spicy Vietnamese vermicelli with an assortment of shellfish, mint, and lemongrass.

{organic} 100% Alvarinho (Albariño)

PINEAPPLE & PEAR, CITRUSY MINERAL ZEST, KISS O' BANANA

Albariño can still be your favorite Spanish white, but it originates just south of the border in Portugal’s Minho (the Vinho Verde region). Alvarinho, as it is known here, is partially responsible for the fresh, fizzy stuff that that we associate with the region’s best-known wines, but it can also be resplendently restrained and mineralistic or fleshy, full-bodied, and brimming with tropical assertiveness. This offering luxuriously leans toward the latter option.

Serving Suggestion: Citrus-marinated grilled squid tacos. Pineapple-anchovie pizza w/ diced crimini mushrooms & ricotta – gifts from the sea & from the forest...

2015 Bairrada Tinto (Encontro, Quinta do)

Quinta do Encontro, Tinto, Bairrada, Portugal 2015

80% Baga, 20% Merlot

BLACK CURRANT FRUIT, LIGHT SPICE, INTENSE FLAVORS

Baga, the primary grape of Bairrada, is known for powerful wines with sometimes tongue-drying tannins. This beauty from Encontro tempers that rustic character with a small addition of Merlot and fully ripened Baga that accentuates its lush, raisiny character. Don't be afraid - this is an exquisite wine that tastes twice as expensive and shows what can happen when wild grapes are in the hands of a skilled winemaker.

Serving Suggestion: This is a big wine that needs some hearty cuisine, heavy on the protein and low on sweetness. Steak makes sense.

40% Baga, 30% Touriga Nacional, 30% Tinta Roriz

FIRM PRUNE, WALNUT & LEATHER, SMOKE & EARTH

Baga, a sturdy black grape with firm tannin and a reputation for ageworthiness hasn't perhaps found its way onto the radar of the average American wine lover just yet, but it's nevertheless part of Iberia's dream team of outstanding and exclusive grape varietals. Complex, rustic, and somewhat anachronistic in its untamed, earthy disposition yet in possession of the wisdom and elegance that can only come with maturity, this wine helps us get our Baga fix and offers an ideal introduction to the grape and its northern Portuguese homeland, Bairrada.

Serving Suggestions: Generously marbled skirt steak & broiled potatoes w/ parsley & chives. Burritos w/ black refried beans, puréed sweet potato, garlic, cilantro, & sour cream.

Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Mourisco

CANDIED GINGER, TOASTY CARAMEL, STAR ANISE, NOT OVERLY SWEET

Jann Hinrich Andresen lived an unusual life. In 1840, at the age of 14, he sailed to Porto from the island of Föhr off the coast of the Netherlands. Five years later, at the unbelievable age of 19, he founded the port house that still carries his name. Almost 200 years later, Andresen is one of the few 100% family-owned port houses, and has become internationally known for its high quality products. Their Fine Tawny offers a perfume of raspberry preserves and warm baking spices. Caramel, hazelnut, and sweet tobacco leaf come out to play on the palate. A perfect port to convert the non-port drinker, and an incredible value.

Quinta de Sant'Ana, Branco, Lisboa, Portugal 2019

{organic}

83% Fernão Pires, 17% Verdelho

CRISP WHITE PEACH, ORANGE BLOSSOM & FLINT, PRISTINE & WHOLESOME

Fernão Pires (intermittently better known as Maria Gomes) is the most planted white grape in Portugal for good reason. It’s one of the few grapes with a reputation for being able to balance generous yields and generous flavor. When the yields are low, however, the flavors become even more interesting. Sant’Ana’s tiny ten hectare estate not only provides us with low yield Fernão Pires (blended with a little Verdelho, for extra energy), it does so in a cool climate conducive to subtlety and acidity. The result is very refreshing, ripe but modest in alcohol, impeccably clean, interesting, and very easy to drink. Super-summery all year long!

Serving Suggestion: Pan fried flounder w/ almond flakes & white grape-shallot chutney. Turkey sandwich w/ mustard, bean sprouts, & hummus.

RUBY RED WITH BRIGHT FRUIT FLAVORS AND SWEET BAKING SPICES

Sourcing from the small 7 hectare vineyard of Quinta da Madalena, all the grapes are still hand harvested and foot tread. In general their ports are a bit less sweet than most. The Lodge Reserve is a blend of reserve wines aged in barrels to mellow their flavor, but not too long to maintain the fresh fruit flavors of a ruby port. This is medium to full-bodied with a warm fruitiness in the center and sweet spices. It’s very rich and a great port value.

Serving Suggestions: Traditional with veined cheeses like Roquefort, Gorgonzola or Stilton - we offer Hook’s 1 year blue and Rogue’s Smoked Blue. Also great on its own as a dessert.

Tawny, 10 Year (750 ml) (Andresen)

Andresen, 10 Year Tawny, Porto, Portugal

DRIED, CANDIED FRUIT. NUTTY & CARAMELIZED. TOASTED OAK.

When one thinks of Porto, Portugal, they envision the massive Port Houses lining the Douro, as it meanders through the city and into the open waters of the Atlantic. Andresen, which was founded in 1845, has the distinction of being one of the few remaining family-owned estates, continuing to create fine Ports in all styles. This 10 year old Tawny is a fantastic representation of what a Tawny port can be. Aged in older oak casks, the wine showcases robust, nutty aromatics follwed by dried fruit and toastiness on the palate, while presenting the perfect balance of sweetness and maturity. Great as a pre-cursor to a lazy afternoon, an after dinner drink, or with some dessert. Who are we kidding?! Perfect for when life calls for a little decadence and sweetness.

Serving Suggestion: Serra da Estrela (sheep’s milk) cheese & roasted almonds. Crème brûlée w/ a side of baked figs. Apple Pie a la Mode.

{sustainable} 50% Tempranillo/Aragonez/Tinta Roriz, 38% Syrah, 12% Touriga Nacional

DARK FRUIT, DUSTY TANNIN, SUAVE MATURITY, MISSION FIG AND HAZLENUT

Making its first appearance in the United States at Wine Authorities, Encostas do Vale Galego is the family passion project of Manuel Cordeiro and his son João. Manuel’s parents grew grapes, so when he retired he built a small winery behind the family home and bought a promising vineyard to return to that tradition - on a professional scale this time. This 2012 bottling, one of the family’s earliest vintages, is a great example of why Portugal is known for some of the best under the radar wines in Europe; aged lightly in oak and extensively in bottle before release, this wine reaches an apex of mature complexity rare to find in an everyday red.

Serving Suggestion: Spit-roasted suckling pig w/ all the fixin's (make sure to grab a bite of crispy skin). Slow simmered black beans & rice with garlic, onion, & peppers.

DARK, RICH, SPICY, FULL-FLAVORED, CRUSHED BERRY

From the southern end of Portugal in the newly renamed region of Tejo we have this full flavored, rich red called "Samora" from the Samora Correia area. The estate has just 120 hectares under vine and the grape vines are 20+ years old. All this for so little money- this has got to be one of the best red wine values around. Just three months of barrel aging rounds out the tannins, and gives us a dark, rich red with capable crushed berries just begging to be shared with something from the grill. A Wine Authorities Exclusive!

Quinta de Sant'Ana, Tinto "Baron Gustav Von Furstenberg", Lisboa, Portugal 2015

CONCENTRATED BLACK PLUM, ROBUST OAK, COFFEE & HERBS

While Ann and James Frost revolutionized and expanded the vineyards of Sant'Ana at the turning of the millennium, it was Ann's parents of Prussian nobility who established the Quinta decades earlier. Her father's name, "Baron Gustav Von Furstenberg," is a very impressive one to live up to, but this bold red comes through with flying colors. Combining Bordelais native Merlot with Portugese champion Touriga Nacional, this wine plays out like the work of a well-heeled garagiste offering from Bordeaux's Haut-Medoc or Pomerol – unabashedly ambitious and modern. Most impressive! A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Socalos do Bouro, Vinho Verte Tinto "Autor", Vinho Verde, Portugal 2020

{organic} Vinhão (Souzão)

INKY, SPICY RASPBERRY, DARK BUT FRESH

The Vinho Verde district is internationally beloved for fresh whites, but the locals love their inky reds... so much so that they are rarely exported. These wines are so dark that they're traditionally served not in glassware but in white ceramic bowls, to highlight this color. Don't let your eyes deceive you though, this opaque red is far from heavy. Victor Goncalves selects this reserve bottling from his best Vinhao vines in his tiny, 5ha hillside vineyard in verdant northern Portugal.

Serving suggestion: Victor served this w/ a home-cured leg of wild boar his brother-in-law hunted. Otherwise, a nice charcuterie board w/ sharp cheeses, serrano ham & spicy lomo will suffice.
