Frizzante Rosé (Paul D.)

Paul D., Frizzante Rosé, Wagram, Austria

100% Zweigelt

RED RASPBERRY & FRUIT PUNCH! FRESH, FRAGRANT, & FRIZZANTE!

This new, ruby-colored jewel in the outstandingly affordable line of wein from young Herr Paul D glimmers with particular brightness as it adds a bit of vibrant spritz into the mix. Fruit forward and lightly off-dry, this is a fun sipper (or guzzler) for the whole family (if the whole family is over 21 of course)! Zweigelt is a particularly apt and enthusiastic candidate for pink vinification, and this fizzy version bursts with tangy red fruit and a whisper of tropicality.

Serving Suggestion: Hotdogs on the grill w/ sauerkraut & beet relish. Fruit salad w/ fresh red grapes, strawberry, & pineapple w/ a splash of balsamic vinegar & chopped chocolate mint.

WHITE FLOWERS, CITRUS & GREEN APPLE, MINERALLY & DRY

Fourth generation winemaker, Anton Bauer has a reputation for making traditional-style wines in the hills of Wagram in Austria. The distinctive aroma of white flowers pervades the nose.

Serving Suggestions: Great with a broad variety of vegetarian dishes. Fleshy fish fare. Anton himself recommends it with Southern fried chicken, and we concur!

2020 Gruner Veltliner "T26" (Tegernseerhof)

Tegernseerhof, Gruner Veltliner "T26" Federspiel, Wachau, Austria 2020

{sustainable} 100% Gruner Veltliner

VIBRANT CITRUS & PEACH,  WHITE PEPPER & MINERAL, GRÜNER GOLD

Hailing from the precariously steep inclines of the Wachau’s vineyards, the always-excellent T26 cuvée takes its name from an eventful tasting session with Austrian importer, Klaus Wittauer, who was in the Mittelbach family cellar at their Tegernseerhof winery, searching for his absolute favorite among the estate’s tanks of recently vinified less-expensive Grüner.  When he found the one, he exclaimed, "This is it!  I'll take the whole tank." That tank was #26, and “T26" has sense served as the nickname for the estate’s greatest value outing in Grüner Veltliner each year. Classic stone-fruit and zesty citrus carry notes of the variety’s hallmark white pepper and flint. Prost!

Serving Suggestion: Juicy fried or oven-roasted chicken w/ crisp skin. Wiener Schnitzel or other breaded, fried cutlets. Mild, flavorful cheeses.

{organic} 100% Gruner Veltliner

ZESTY! LITHE CITRUS & PEACH, WHITE PEPPER & GOOSEBERRY

Northeastern Austria’s Weinviertel (translating to “wine quarter”) is the Central European nation’s largest area of wine production, in fact accounting for half of all acreage planted to Grüner Veltliner. This offering from Martin Minkowitsch (representing the 15th generation of the estate) is classic for the massive, Slovakia & Czech-bordering DAC, brimming with restrained citrus & stone fruit, an almost arugula-like pepperiness, and unexpected gooseberry undercurrents that may gently recall Sauvignon Blanc.

Serving Suggestion: Open-faced sandwich of smoked salmon & Emmental on rye w/ quail egg, parsley, & alfalfa sprouts. Cucumber salad w/ dill, white wine vinegar, olive oil, & black pepper.

2021 Grüner Veltliner "Wanted" [250ml can] (Paul D.)

Paul D., Grüner Veltliner [250ml can], Wagram, Austria, 2021

{sustainable} 100% Gruner Veltliner

FRESH APPLE, CREAMY MELON, SPRITZY PEPPERCORN

On a wine buying trip in Austria, Paul Direder stood before us looking barely old enough to drive. He smiled as we sampled his wine and stood nervously with his mother at his side waiting for a reaction. His first vintage was brilliant. The family farm dates back to 1849 and Paul D. carries on the family's agricultural name. Under the tutelage of Anton Bauer, Paul gives us a bright, fresh Grüner Veltliner in a dry floral style that has crisp acidity and pure drinkability.

Serving Suggestion: Perfect for beach blankets and summer hangouts. Picnic foods like chicken salad, tuna salad, and egg salad sandwiches.

ZESTY LIME & FRAGRANT PEACH, CHISELED MINERALITY, ELEGANT

Best known for its elegant, powerful sparkling wines which can rival Champagne, Weingut Steininger consistently produces profound wines with exemplary purity and focus. Karl, the estate's proprietor, prefers that his wines showcase the distinctive characteristics of the grape varietals with which he works, encouraging those elements to take center stage. Here we have a Grüner whose features are clearly delineated, showing off trademark flinty mineral, citrus, and stone fruit with a tinge of sesame-like nuttiness.

2017 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Höhereck" (Tegernseerhof)

Tegernseerhof, Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Hohereck", Wachau, Austria 2017

100% Gruner Veltliner

GOLDEN STONE FRUIT & KOREAN PEAR, FULL-BODIED, RACY & DRY

The coveted title of pedigree, “Smaragd,” is inspired by the emerald pigmentation of the strikingly beautiful lacertid lizards which can be spotted basking on stones throughout the steep vineyards of the Wachau. This legal distinction is reserved for wines made from the ripest, richest grapes in this revered region. Martin Mittelbach’s Höhereck vineyard, itself, is barely an acre in size and was laid out carefully by his family in the 1960s. Its 60 year Grüner vines yield liquid gold...

Serving Suggestion: Brodet (Croatian seafood stew) w/ yellowfin, rockfish, mussels, & prawns – served w/ polenta. Pad Thai w/ crispy fried tofu.

2019 Orange Wine ''Abartig Einfach'' (Edelbauer, Christoph)

Christoph Edelbauer, Orange Wine "Abartig Einfach", Kamptal, Austria 2019

{organic} 50% Gewürztraminer, 50% Muscat

POMELO & BLOOD ORANGE, REFRESHINGLY ASTRINGENT, A HAZY SUNSET

Lush yet lithe, funky yet fresh, assertive yet approachable, this bottle is filled with delicious contradictions. This latest arrival from Kamptal's Christoph Edelbauer is forged from (yet unrecognizable as) Gewürztraminer and Muscat, wrapping the pair of typically hyper-aromatic varieties in a hazy, chiseled, orange package unto itself. Initially most reminiscent of pomelo or grapefruit, sharp, zesty citrus gives way to undercurrents of young persimmon and red fruit. The finish is lush and yeasty, taking the palate for quite the rollercoaster ride.

Serving Suggestion: Savory kimchi pancake w/ squid & extra scallions. Arugula/pomegranate salad w/ blue cheese & blood orange vinaigrette.

Steindorfer, Pinot Gris "Fuchsloch", Burgenland, Austria 2019

100% Pinot Gris

DRY, RICH, FULL-BODIED, PEAR, STONE FRUITS MINERALS

Meeting Ernst Steindorfer is like meeting a childhood hero. But unlike a comic book character, Ernst is a real man and makes sensational wine. Standing in an immaculate cellar, one could literally eat (or taste wine) off the floor. This Pinot Gris has bright fresh notes and a touch of barrel aging to round the edges of this single vineyard bottling. Complex and Alsatian in style, this is a full-bodied white with stone fruit and a hint of vanilla spice.

Serving Suggestion: Caramelized onion tart with crispy bacon bits; Moroccan chicken with savory almond cous-cous; most meaty fish dishes.

2017 Riesling Kamptal Reserve (Edelbauer, Christoph)

Christoph Edelbauer, Riesling Reserve, Kamptal, Austria 2017 {organic} 100% Riesling

ROBUST LEMON & LIME, RACY YET ROUND, SEDUCTIVE

"Slatey, full of stone fruit! Soft, with corners and edges!" Almost serving as a counterpoint to the famously firm and assertively acidic wines of Austria's Wachau, this impressive selection from Christoph Edelbauer presents an outstandingly opulent rendition of Riesling. One of the most full-bodied examples of the variety you're liable to encounter, it manages to combine the zesty citric zeal and proclivity for mineral complexity with a more mouth-filling voluptuousness.

Serving suggestion: Savory Szechuan salt & pepper squid w/ crispy-roasted green beans. Tempura squash & shiitakes w/ ponzu dipping sauce.

2017 Riesling Smaragd "Bergdistel" (Tegernseerhof)

Tegernseerhof, Riesling "Bergdistel" Wachau, Austria 2017

100% Riesling

RIPE LIME & PINEAPPLE, SUAVE MINERAL, RACY YET RICH

Austria’s Wachau, unlike Germany’s Rheingau, cannot claim to be the cradle of Riesling’s (likely medieval) origins, but it certainly can and does offer friendly yet fierce competition as the site of the variety’s absolute zenith. Imposingly steep, terraced vineyards are stony and sun-soaked guaranteeing impressive ripeness (here in one of Austria’s coolest viticultural climates) while gneiss soils further bolster acidity. Most would agree that Smaragd classé like this represent Austria’s crème de la crème, but subjectivity aside, these are the elites of the elite. Wachau and Martin Mittelbach’s Tegernseerhof seems to revel in not only meeting and exceeding expectations but doing so without climbing into the catastrophic price ranges of his colleagues and competitors. Utopie!

Serving Suggestion: Smoked trout schnitzel w/ caper-mustard cream sauce & lemony white asparagus w/ marinated artichoke hearts. Szechuan salt & pepper squid & pickled lotus root.

2017 Riesling Smaragd "Kellerberg" (Tegernseerhof)

Tegernseerhof, Riesling "Kellerberg", Wachau, Austria 2017 {sustainable} 100% Riesling

CONCENTRATED LEMON & GREEN APPLE, MEGALITHIC MINERALITY

True to its name, the Kellerberg is indeed a mountain whose vinous denizens are destined for the cellar (and are often capable of aging gracefully for aeons). The grandest of what might be considered Austria’s grand crus, this steeply sloping corner of the Wachau isn’t only prized by Austrians but is indisputably one of Riesling’s world capitals and a World Heritage Site. This spectacular specimen of Riesling is bone dry, blazingly acidic, resoundingly ripe, and built around a rock-solid core of mineralistic complexity.

Serving Suggestion: Grilled squid w/ lemon-caper sauce & asparagus. Tempura green beans & sweet yellow onions w/ aioli.

2017 Riesling Weinviertel ''De Vite'' (Minkowitsch, Roland)

Ronald Minkowitsch, Riesling "De Vite", Weinviertel, Austria 2017

{organic} 100% Riesling

LEMON & GOLDEN APPLE, LIQUID MINERAL ELEGANCE, RACY & RIPE

From the far northeastern reaches of Austria, the sprawling Weinviertel region, this generous dry Riesling balances characteristic brightness with a, perhaps, somewhat unexpected impression of roundness & juiciness (maybe courtesy, in part, of the 50 year-old vines employed) given these climes’ reputation for leaner, more herbaceous stylings. The label sports the distinction “Rheinriesling,” but don’t be confused as this term is helpful here and in Czecchia’s Moravia to the north to distinguish from the unrelated Croatian native, Welschriesling, whose presence is significant in this part of Austria.

Serving Suggestion: Crisp-skinned, panfried trout w/ parsley, lemon, butter, & potato salad w/ dill & sour cream. Thick, hearty butternut squash soup w/ cream cheese, marjoram, cinnamon, & cayenne.

2015 Sauvignon Blanc Trockenbeerenauslese [375 ml] (Edelbauer, Christoph)

Christoph Edelbauer, Sauvignon Blanc Trockenbeerenauslese, Austria 2015 [375 ml]

100% Sauvignon Blanc

TROPICAL FRUIT, HONEY, CITRUS ZEST; HARMONIOUS SWEETNESS & ACIDITY

Sauvignon Blanc for dessert? You bet your ass. Christoph Edelbauer's dessert wine is a masterpiece of harmony. Think warm honey dripping slowly over a plate of tropical fruit, dusted w/ grapefruit zest & served alongside a bowl of baked golden apples topped w/ ethereally light caramel. Rich, full sweetness yields to palate-cleansing acidity so deftly that you'll need to savor another mouthful just to see how the trick is performed.

Serving Suggestion: A small plate of fruit & cheese in the quiet dark, late at night.

2018 Zweigelt (Edelbauer, Christoph)

Christoph Edelbauer, Zweigelt, Kamptal, Austria 2018

{organic} 100% Zweigelt

RICH MULBERRY, BRIGHT BLACKBERRY, SUAVE SANDALWOOD

"Forest berries and smoky aromas! Creamy with a little bit of caramel! Powerful with broad shoulders." Zweigelt’s intense berry energy reminds wine lovers of everything from Zinfandel to Dolcetto, but the comparisons miss how one-of-a-kind this grape is. Bursting with dense, fiercely purple fruit, this offering has a distinctive personality. While Kamptal is generally better known for its whites, this is one of the most commanding (though gentle) Austrian reds we’ve ever had.

Serving Suggestion: Fried pork cutlets w/ beet, red cabbage, & cranberry salad. Enchiladas w/ sweet potato, shiitakes, & sour cream.

The Carnuntum region lies just southeast of Vienna and continues to gain momentum and fanfare for its lively reds. This rosé rendition is named for his daughter, Anna Marie, and showcases the bright, berryish signatures of Zweigelt with fleshy ripeness and spice.
