2018 Blanc de Noir Trocken (Schneider, Georg Albrecht)
Georg Albrecht Schneider, Blanc de Noir Trocken, Rheinhessen, Germany 2018 100% Pinot Noir WHITE STONEFRUIT & QUINCE, GENTLE FLINT & FOREST BLOSSOMS While white Pinot Noir might not be foremost on the radar for most of us, the red grape variety has a wealth of experienced being vinified without skin contact in order to produce clear-ish (aka white) wines. In fact, France’s Champagne began utilizing this technique even before exploring sparkling wine! This still rendition from the always awesome Albrecht Schneider brings together piquant orchard-ish notes with a delicately floral perfume in round yet fresh, elegant package that’s memorable, distinctive, and delicious. Serving Suggestion: Pork chops w/ baked apples & halved boiled potatoes w/ dill. Savory beet salad w/ citrus, chèvre, & quince/sherry vinaigrette. |

2016 Niersteiner Hipping Riesling Spätlese (Schneider, Georg Albrecht)
Georg Albrecht Schneider, Niersteiner Hipping Riesling Spätlese, Rheinhessen, Germany 2016 100% Riesling ZESTY LIME & PINEAPPLE, MAGNIFICENT MINERALITY Whatever the time of year, when we taste the zesty combination of bright citrus and restrained tropicality – the graceful contrast of mouthwatering acidity and gentle sweetness that punctuates the profile of classic Rheinhessen Spätlese, we immediately want to hit the slopes… The famously red slope of Nierstein, to be precise. Like a wintery piña colada that hasn't had any irritating songs written about it, this perennially refreshing white could bring a kiss of healthy chill to a summer evening or pair spectacularly with traditional Thanksgiving/holiday fare. Serving Suggestion: Pineapple-baked ham w/ crisp, steamed string beans. Papaya salad w/ fish sauce & coconut rice. |

2020 Orange Wine "Müeller Time/SanderStruck" (Staffelter Hof, Weingut)
Weingut Staffelter Hof, Orange Wine "Müeller Time/SanderStruck", Mosel, Germany 2018 {organic} 100% Müller-Thurgau GRANNY SMITH & PINEAPPLE, HAZY & HERBACEOUS, LEMONADE (WITHOUT THE SWEETNESS!) More reminiscent of a gourmet Hefeweizen/lemonade shandy than the beer slogan its moniker seems to be derived from, this dry, super-session-able, orange-ish delight clocks in at a meager 11% alcohol and begs to be discovered as the diurnal-friendly guzzler that it is. But, as much fun as this is, it isn’t all fun, and there are as many layers of intrigue to this wine as there are puns wrapped up in its branding! Müller-Thurgau is an all-too-familiar yet mysterious offspring of Riesling celebrated by some but best known as bulk wine fodder. However, you’d never suspect that from this unique beauty. Serving Suggestion: Reuben on pumpernickel w/ horseradish mustard & pickled beets. Ricotta pizza w/ pineapple, capers, & pickled onions. |

All the summery sweetness is tempered by blindingly bright acidity, cleansing the palate and getting you ready for more. Brace yourselves. It might not be fair to outright assert that Mosel Rieslings represent the absolute epitome of the grape’s signature combination of intense terroir and unremitting tropical citrus, but the region is certainly a contender for Riesling “world capital” status. The wines ain’t cheap, but the quality is reliably very high. The Melsheimer estate crafts this cuvée from grapes grown in its prized vineyards, striving for exceptional balance. The hand-crafted moniker is well deserved here. Delicious and tremendously complex! Serving Suggestion: Japanese squid salad w/ sesame, cucumbers, & pickled plum. 2019 Riesling Trocken "Sandstein" (Gysler, Alexander)
Alexander Gysler, Riesling Trocken "Sandstein", Rheinhessen, Germany 2019 {biodynamic} 100% Riesling LIME & APRICOT, PRONOUNCED MINERALITY, CHISELED & SEXY “Sandstein,” unsurprisingly refers to the sandstone vineyard site that the vines responsible for this cuvée call home. If judging a book by its cover is a bad idea, then choosing a wine by its label is similarly unwise. Yet here is a wine whose label actually does speak volumes aesthetically. Alexander Gysler proudly “strives for less,” and the minimalism, elegance, and utopian purity of his wines are almost architectural, tangible elements on the tongue. This offering perfectly encapsulates the essence of contemporary, dry Rheinhessen Riesling – robustly ripe yet enticingly acidic, agile, and angular. Serving Suggestion: Lightly smoked trout w/ capers & spaghetti squash w/ lemon, garlic, & butter. "Country brunch” w/ hickory bacon, poached eggs, & citrusy asparagus / tomato salad. |

Bollig-Lehnert, Riesling Kabinett "Trittenheimer Apotheke", Mosel, Germany 2020 100% Riesling BAKED APPLE, JUICY LIME, FLORAL, LIGHTLY SWEET Stefan Bollig is an old friend of ours who makes his lovely Mosel Valley Rieslings in the traditional style: juicy, lightly sweet, greatly rich and layered with complex flavors of apples, citrus, and petrol. Through the front window of his winery/home climbs the steep, slatey Goldtropschen hillside he farms just across the street, so close he can hear birds chirping on the vines from his front yard. 2019 Scheurebe Trocken ''Sonnentau'' (Gysler, Alexander)
Weingut Gysler, Scheurebe Trocken "Sonnentau", Rheinhessen, Germany 2019 {biodynamic} 100% Scheurebe WHITE PEACH & GRAPEFRUIT, BRIGHT & GENEROUS, ZESTY MINERAL Scheurebe, perhaps the best known among Riesling’s offspring, is also one of the most distinctive grapes of central Europe. Sharing both Riesling’s beacon-like acidity and its capacity for wines riddled with mineralistic intrigue, Scheurebe also has an almost Sauvignon-esque tinge that helps it stand out resolutely from its parent grape. This beautiful, biodynamic offering from Gysler layers elegance and power in shimmering, utopian waves of vibrant aromas and virile acidity. The cuvée’s name, “Sonnentau,” refers to sundew plants, and the wine, itself, is every bit as etherial and psychedelic in character as the otherworldly carnivorous flowers for which it’s named. Dr. Heyden, Silvaner "Alten Reben" Trocken, Rheinhessen, Germany, 2018 {sustainable} 100% Silvaner FLORAL, CLEAN CITRUS, BRIGHT AND FRESH Old vine Silvaner is a true rarity in Germany's Rheinhessen. While it remains the second most planted grape (after Riesling) in Germany, it has always been in the shadows. In fact some have even accused it of neutrality. So, Frank Heyden quietly makes this from old vines, and the quality shines so brightly that all shadows disappear in a fresh, zesty, mouth-wateringly delicious wash of Silvaner-ish-ness. Juicy and floral from start to finish, this is a great example of coaxing the best from a grape. Serving Suggestion: We had this with Frank's mom's carrot soup, smoked trout, and artisanal cold cuts. Alexander Gysler, Spatburgunder Rosé "Funkenflug", Rheinhessen, Germany 2020 {biodynamic} 100% Pinot Noir (Spatburgunder) BLACK CHERRY & LINGONBERRY, LUSH & FRESH, GENTLE & LINGERING Gysler’s affinity for assertive ripeness suits this rich rendition of Pinot Noir (in rosé form) to a T. Utilizing the grape’s German nom de guerre, Spätburgunder (referencing the grape’s Burgundian origins and late-ripening proclivities), the estate does tremendous work with the variety. Mouth caressingly juicy and bursting with intensely red aromas, this is the sort of rosé that, while plenty refreshing in warmer months, continues to be seductive throughout the year – especially as a companion for fall and winter feasts.
