2020 Altosur Cabernet Sauvignon (Sophenia, Finca)

Altosur, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza, Argentina, 2020

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Textbook Cabernet Sauvignon and a stunning value considering that most cabs at this price are junk. This one really shines and is completely authentic tasting. From high elevation vineyards in the Andes Mountains this cab comes roaring out with firm, rich flavors and a long finish. The balance and purity are very impressive. Great structure this vintage. Very serious Cab flavors for the money.

Serving Suggestion: Bison burgers with sharp cheddar. Cabeza tacos from your favorite local taco truck!

2021 Altosur Chardonnay (Sophenia, Finca)

Finca Sophenia, Altosur Chardonnay, Tupungato-Mendoza, Argentina 2021

Very impressive classic apple and citrus flavored Chardonnay with a perfect balance between acid and fruit. No need to worry about heavy oak or malolactic here, this is very light handed in the wood and butter department. The high altitude vineyards give us grapes with super ripeness, never losing their backbone. The winemaking here is stellar- in a style that pushes the fruit but never overdoing it. Bravo again to Sophenia for making such a wonderfully full-flavored Chardonnay that lets the fruit come through rather than cloaking it in wood.

Serving Suggestion: Simply roasted chicken, moist and tender with fresh herbs, or cream sauce over pasta with clams and garlic.

2019 Altosur Malbec (Sophenia, Finca)

Altosur, Malbec, Tupungato, Mendoza, Aregentina, 2019

Soft and full with tea, dark chocolate, leather, berries

At heights of close to 4,000 feet a vine produces some serious fruit. This wine is so much more than a $9.99er. Harvested at dawn in the cool morning hours, this Malbec has blackberry and blueberry fruit playing with soft tannin, a kiss of oak and oozing with pleasure. Unlike most Malbecs in this price range, it’s grown, produced and bottled entirely by a small family winery!

Try With:

This is drinking wine pure and simple. If you need a solid red to serve with dinner you found it. Originally made to go with simple grilled steak and potatoes.

2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (Sophenia, Finca)

Finca Sophenia, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Tupungato, Mendoza, Argentina 2019

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Very impressive classic cherry Cabernet flavors with a perfect balance between acid/tannin and fruit. The finish is long and deep showing ample toasty oak, but never cloaking the fruit. The high altitude vineyards give us grapes with super ripeness, never losing their backbone. The winemaking here is stellar- in a style that pushes the fruit but never overdoing it. We wish all inexpensive cabs could taste this balanced.

Serving Suggestion: A nice Cabernet likes to saddle up to red meats like a NY strip steak; tri-tips marinated in garlic and soy sauce; and a burger is not too good for this wine either!

2019 Malbec "Alhambra" (Abril, Finca)

Finca Abril, Malbec "Alhambra", Mendoza, Argentina 2019

100% Malbec

The Uco Valley is a prized district of Argentina's vast Mendoza region, where century old vineyards are being revitalized to make some of the country's most exciting wines. The cooler climate and 4,000 feet elevations make wines like this one, that bring together ruby-fruited richness with violety freshness. Gustavo and Maria Laura's 23 hectare organic operation here, now in its 25th year in operation, is mosquito sized compared to the million bottle behemoth's that dominate Argentina's industry, but the wines more than hold their own against their mass-produced neighbors.

Serving Suggestion: A charcuterie passed among friends, loarded loaded with aged sheep's milk cheeses (like Manchego), Prosciutto and smoky Chorizo. Slow roasted beef brisket.

2018 Malbec "I" (Pulenta)

Pulenta Estate, Malbec "I", Alto Agrelo, Mendoza, Argentina 2018

100% Malbec

This cuvée's title (simply the roman numeral "I" ) identifies the Malbec grape, not surprisingly, as the Pulenta family's first priority. Eschewing the ultra-concentrated and monstrously fruity style of many contemporary Argentine Malbecs, they've focused on the balance which is possible between elegance and power. A delicate smoky finesse derived from aging in large French oak barrels supplements and supports the varietal's trademark flavors of black fruit and chocolate. The Pulenta family, descendants of Italian immigrants, represent three generations of viticulture in Argentina.

Serving Suggestion: Grilled flank steak with a cilantro and parsley chimichurri. Potato empanada with ground beef, cilantro, and garlic.

2019 Malbec Reserve (Sophenia, Finca)

Finca Sophenia, Reserve Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina 2019

100% Malbec

This mid-sized winery keeps coming through with the good stuff. We're often wary of carrying too many wines from one winery, but Sophenia continues to astound us while most other wineries cannot compete at the same price. This Malbec is lovely and modern, with noticeable oak aging, but perfectly balanced and showing great subtlety for its price. A real crowd pleaser!

Serving Suggestions: Steak man! That's what they do in Argentina. Steak, steak, steak! With a side of steak.
