Domaine des Grandes Bruyères, Beaujolais-Villages Rouge "Prestige" Vieilles Vignes ~ Fut de Chene, Beaujolais, Burgundy, France 2017

{sustainable} 100% Gamay (80+ year old vines)

CHERRY & RASPBERRY, FENNEL & AMARO SPICE, SUPPLE & EXOTIC, HINT OF CEDAR

Fragrant! Aromatic! Floral! Baking Spices! Vermouth! Did we mention it smells good? Prestigious, even! If you're new to Gamay, you'll find that it can press the bounds between engaging in an epicurean experience and discovering a new dimension to one's olfactory!  One might think that this wine grew straight into Ninth Street Flowers from Spice Bazaar. Truth is, the cuvée "Prestige" comes from 30 rolling acres of organically farmed Burgundian earth and aged in oak to profound result. Its mouth-filling lushness couples with a grippy tannic structure to such an elegant effect. Yet, somehow it maintains an unbearable lightness of being... unbearable due only to the fact that they can't fit more than five glasses in a bottle!

Serving Suggestion: The sultry, savory swindlings of your favorite Chinese restaurant. Five Spice Chicken. Salty sweet potatoes fries!

2019 Blanc, Vaucluse "Sud Absolu" (Ligiere, Domaine La)

Domaine La Ligiere, Vaucluse Blanc "Sud Absolu", Rhone Valley, France 2019

{organic} 100% Muscat á Petits Grains

APRICOT & PINEAPPLE, SULTANA, DRY WITH VIBRANT ACIDITY

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, an ancient pan-Mediterranean grape with no shortage of clout in this corner of the Southern Rhone has long been typecast as a grape whose undeniable potential for decadence and dessert should be pursued to the absolute fullest. Taking a totally different tact with this cuvée, Ligière follows a decidedly non-dessert, dry route here and employs the fiercely characterful grape as a delicious quaffer. This is an unusually refreshing yet perfumed example of what is most likely the original “Muscat." It is, quite literally, the granddaddy of Torrontes, and we highly recommend it to fans of that Argentine grape!

Serving Suggestion:  Crab-based bouillabaisse w/ copious rouille (French Mediterranean spicy olive oil-infused mayonnaise w/ garlic & saffron). Similarly, spider rolls w/ scallion, lots of masago, & aioli!

2020 Bordeaux Rose (Haut Dambert, Chateau)

Chateau Haut Dambert, Rose, Bordeaux, France 2020

BRIGHT RED RASPBERRY, RHUBARB & ROSE PETAL

Born in the vineyards "between two seas" this equal-parts cuvée of Cabernet Franc with its offspring, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, drifts calmly yet energetically on its own sea of zesty acidity and vibrant red fruit. Recalling raspberry and dried cranberry, the fruit is ribboned through with wisps of floral and herbaceous perfume. The estate’s Jean-Luc Buffeteau, a trained enologist, treats each varietal differently for this cuvée in order for individual strengths to shine through.

Serving Suggestion: Olive oil-cured albacore w/ pickled artichoke hearts, & raspberry vinaigrette. Zesty tabouli w/ dried sultanas, basil, & olives.

Clocking in at a super-summery (but, frankly welcome year-round) alcohol % of 12.5, this dancingly bright rosé evaporates on the tongue while not lacking in intrigue or nuance. The Entre-Deux-Mers stretch of Bordeaux gives us the lion’s share of the region’s vibrant whites, and this pink take on Cabernet Sauvignon is an absolute delight that manages to taste like the famously intense variety while having an appeal that’s completely different.

Born in the vineyards of the Cote Chalonnaise's Montagny appellation, a mere half-hour south of the Aligoté grape's zenith zone of Bouzeron, this gorgeously restrained white is a Burgundian niche classic. Equally appealing as carefree aperitif or intellectual delight exuding elegantly mineralistic and ephemerally floral charms, this old-vine Aligoté nails each of the varietal's classical characteristics – lithe, light, and very lean but brimming with personality. ETHEREAL ORCHARD, SUBTLE TOAST & WAXY LEES

Though this cuvée from our friends, Céline & Laurent Tripoz, may take its name from the fact that it sees a short period of oak aging in a combination of new and older barrels, oak is far from this gorgeous white's foremost defining characteristic. Brimming with a waxy yeastiness that resembles that of some champagne and a winning combination of golden apple and tangy tropical fruit, this classical southern white Burgundy allows its time in oak to reveal itself as a delectable toasty spice that is as subtle and as integrated as it is sumptuous.

SAVORY AROMATICS, EARTH, CHERRY, & BLACK PEPPER. DEEPLY FRENCH.

In the fun loving and party-centric Bugey family - which includes the sparkly-sweet cult sensation we know and love - this wine is the dignified cousin who stands in aloof contrast to his hedonistic relatives. Deep and dark with savory spice, and a distinctly old-school structure focused on mouthwatering acidity. It's still a Bugey, however, so it can't help but let some purply fruit fun slip through the cracks. Good wine runs thicker than water.

Serving Suggestion: Tomme and Comté cheeses are a natural (and excellent) choice, but this would pair well with heartier Middle Eastern fare, like Lebanese-style eggplant stuffed with lamb, tomato, and cinnamon.

Coteaux du Layon, a northern enclave of Anjou which takes its name from the Loire tributary, Layon, has gained fame intensely sweet, botrysized dessert wines nicknamed “Sauternes-Killers”. This still sweet yet impeccably balanced, non-dessert offering has what it takes in the realms of both powerful flavor and intense taste sensations to be counted as a true powerhouse. While it can be (and should be, on occasion) paired with desserts, its richness, complexity and elegance makes it a treat in its own right.

Serving Suggestion: Pungent cheeses – creamy goat’s milk or otherwise. Tangy, fruit-based deserts w/ citrus, pear, or apple.

{organic} 100% Chenin Blanc

CONCENTRATED CITRUS & APPLE TURNOVER, INTENSE & FILLED W/ FINESSE, ETHERIAL SPICE

Coteaux de Layon, itself, is a lofty enough appellation for sweet wine. Some of the world's most revered dessert offerings come from this westerly enclave of the Middle Loire. The Premier Cru portions of this celebrated terrain have, by definition, earned an even more prestigious pedigree. Understandably, these thangs ain’t cheap. But! How often can a wine lover get their hands on the crème de la crème of a certain wine genre or ambassador for the capital of a certain style without crossing into the triple digits? Not often at all, but here’s a spectacularly delicious, rare opportunity.

Serving Suggestion: Apple pastries (especially w/ gingery, wintry richness). Decadent triple crème cheeses, dried apricots, & quince.

2019 Cotes de Gascogne Rouge "Les Terres Basses" (Laballe, Domaine)

Domaine Laballe, Cotes de Gascogne Rouge "Terres Basses", Gascony, France 2019

50% Merlot, 25% Tannat, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon

BLACK PLUM & CURRANT, EARTHY CLAY & BLACK TEA LEAVES

Gascony and gastronomy, appropriately, share six letters in common. This southwestern corner of France is home to decadent cheeses, patés, game, and legendary brandy. Its viticulture provides us with outlandishly refreshing whites, or “patio wines” as well as brutish, tannic reds made from Tannat. This Blend of Merlot, Cab Sauv, and the aforementioned Tannat, however, is medium bodied and gentle with ample earthy complexities and food-friendly brightness. A delight!

Serving Suggestion: A great choice for heavy cheese &/or charcuterie spreads and snacks. Black bean/sweet potato/kale empanadas.

The Saint-Victoire sub-appellation of the Cotes de Provence wasn’t demarcated until 2005, but it should come as no surprise that any area within this, what is effectively the world capital of rosé production, which manages to rise head and shoulders above its surroundings is truly special. Nestled against the slopes of of the imposing Mount Saint Victoire, these vineyards have the ability to imbue grapes with a show stopping combination of acidity and ripe, powerful fruit. Domaine Pinchinat has long been responsible for some of our most popular offerings, and this outstanding cuvée represents an exceptional treat.

Alain de Welle is a nice, peaceful man. As the owner and manager of Pinchinat, it’s his vision that is expressed in each glass of his wine that is served these days. Although his family has farmed this vineyard for over two centuries (and the land farmed back to pre-history), his father broke from tradition and raised him in the nearby city of Aix. Alain returned to his family’s roots, (pun intended) and makes honest, modest wines that speak truths without trying to “blow you away."

Taking its title from the childhood nickname of Jean-Pierre Thibon, Libian's patriarch and father to the sisters who currently manage the estate, the "BuveZ'en" rosé is a wine with an identity as chiseled as the estate's other gorgeous wines with which we've fallen increasingly in love over the past several years. 2018 Cotes du Rhone Rouge (Pères de l'Eglise, Domaine des)

Domaine des Pères de l'Eglise, Cotes du Rhone Rouge, Rhone Valley, France 2017

Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah

RED RASPBERRY & KIRSCH, BAZAAR-ISH POTPOURRI, ROSEMARY

The last few years have yielded a bounty of truly stunning Cotes du Rhones that seem to come closer to reaching the regal heights of their more impressively-pedigreed brethren from AOCs like Gigondas and Chateauneuf du Pape. This beautiful gem does indeed come from entirely within the bounds of the Chateauneuf AOC yet opts to declassify itself down to the sprawling and much more variable (in terms of quality) Cotes du Rhone AOC. The resemblance, however, is striking! Clocking in at a percentage point lower in alcohol content, it’s not quite as big as its big brothers, but the gorgeously exotic perfumes that we giddily associate with the output of the outstanding Peres de l’Eglise estate loudly affirm their presence during roll call.

Serving Suggestion: Roast turkey drumsticks w/ turmeric, cumin, paprika, & rosemary w/ corn oil-fried sweet potato wedges. Black bean soup w/ cayenne, cumin, garlic, & diced tomatoes over polenta.

[biodynamic] 75% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah

RASPBERRY & DRIED CRANBERRY, SWEET ROSEMARY, EARTH & DARK CHOCOLATE

"Drink wine. This is life eternal," famously wrote the ever beauty-seeking Omar Khayyam, and 800 years later, his attitudes and observations resound with timelessness. The Thibon sisters of Mas de Libian have named this delicious cuvée after the 12th century Persian poet and philosopher, and its exotic perfume of rosemary, lavender, and cocoa combine with violet-fruited romance in a sublimely exotic testament to his writings. This wine is hedonistic and nurturing, so heed the advice of Khayyam and take "the daughter of the vine to spouse".

Serving Suggestion: Lamb medallions simmered with sliced dates, saffron, and cumin. Okra, potatoes, and eggplant stewed with caramelized onions, tomato paste, black pepper, and a squeeze of lime juice (served over rice).

BRIGHT BLACKBERRY, MINERALLY EARTH, VIOLETS & MEDITERRANEAN SPICE

A cuvée made precious as much by its exoticism as its rarity, "La Calade" takes its name from the prized stoney soil of one of the finest growing sites in the Southern Rhone. Showcasing a decidedly elegant side of the monstrous Mourvedre grape, this wine resonates with dense purple energy, enchanted wildness, and the mysterious potpourri of Mediterranean France. The Thibon sisters of Mas de Libian never fail to produce highly memorable wines with unique personalities.

Serving Suggestion: Mmmm, Mourvedre and lamb are such extraordinary bedfellows that we really need look no further for a fantastic pairing. Look to North Africa for inspiration incorporating saffron, cumin, & cinnamon accompanied by couscous.

A fabulous yet lesser-known corner of the Côtes-du-Rhone Villages, Saint-Gervais lies northwest of Tavel and Lirac at roughly the same latitude as Gigondas. Guy Steinmaier set up shop here around 1960, and this offering showcases a more traditional, Grenache-heavy Rhône blend in contrast to his more usual, iconoclastic style. Concentrated red fruit, spice, mineral, and elegant earthy notes are found in this lively treat.

This red from the village of Laudun brings a restrained clarity of dark fruit together with hedonistic pepper, spice, and a satisfying earthy richness which is exotic, elegant, and unmistakably Mediterranean. The Pontaud family, champions of terroir-driven wines and environmentally sound viticulture, have here brought to life the perfect Chateauneuf-du-Pape understudy.

STRAWBERRY & RED RASPBERRY, ROBUST & REFRESHING

Laudun is, perhaps, a lesser-known corner of the Southern Rhône’s right bank, but its proximity to Chateauneuf-du-Pape (on the river’s opposite bank) and, more relevantly, Tavel to its south is telling, and the quality offered by its stony terroir is exceptional. This robust rosé isn’t quite as dense (or dark) as those of the aforementioned Tavel, but its enthusiastic ripeness is reminiscent, and its Cinsault-dominated composition imbues it with wonderful brightness, lively acidity, and impeccable balance.

Cairanne is one of the brightest points in the Southern Rhone and, despite its increasingly lofty reputation, somehow continues to remain a source for some of the valley's best values. Forged predominantly from 100 year old Grenache vines and Syrah planted more than half a century ago, this offering from Patrice Jubian makes a superb ambassador for this corner of Mediterranean France, layering the concentrated black and purple fruit associated with these varietals and the coveted garrigue-ish aromatics of the "méridional" countryside.

BLACK CHERRY, CHOCOLATE-COVERED FIG, ROSEWATER & ROSEMARY

This unusually Mourvèdre-driven cuvée is quite iconoclastic, and quietly iconic. Mourvèdre enjoys a lofty reputation among growers throughout Mediterranean France for the character and intensity that it brings, but it also has earned the reputation of being a sluggish ripener and, thus, a liability in cooler years. Saint-Anne’s fame is partially anchored to the estate’s affinity for it, ripening it to perfection and trusting it to headline this broad-shouldered, exquisitely exotic red.

TART STRAWBERRY & WHITE CHERRY, CRACKED STONE & TOASTY MACAROON

Of the impressive, non-Champagne areas that produce French sparkling wine under the name, “Crémant,” Alsace is perhaps the very most exciting. Arnaud Baur’s affinity for bubbly offerings has remained consistently and particularly impressive for us, and while this refreshing rosé may not quite rival its white counterparts in yeasty, Champagne-ish maturity, it more than rises to the occasion, stepping sideways and finding a fresher, more fruit-forward voice while remaining chiseled, very dry, and with traces of biscuity richness. Beautiful!

Grolleau Gris is the lighter skinned, pink-ish variant of a once-ubiquitous Loire grape responsible for an ocean's worth of crisp rosés and light-bodied reds. We don’t encounter Grolleau-based wines as much as we once did, and Grolleau Gris is an outright rarity! Long in the shadows of this famous neighbor on the opposite bank as well as the regal, robust rosé flowing from Tavel to the south, Lirac has never been allowed to be one of the Southern Rhone’s most visible stars. That doesn’t stop it from producing wines that  rival (and often, in terms of value, outshine) those of its more famous surroundings. This offering from the Borrelly family estate bursts onto the scene with bold, blackish-purple fruit, exotic perfume, and a sumptuously toasted oak undercurrent. Magnificently Mediterranean!

Serving Suggestion: Roast duck w/ cranberry-balsamic sauce & rosemary. Savory black bean & sweet potato enchilada w/ tempeh & chipotle.

2020 Macon-Villages (Gandines, Domaine des)

Domaine des Gandines, Macon-Villages, Burgundy, France 2020

{biodynamic} 100% Chardonnay

FULL & FLAVORFUL, LEMON, HAZELNUT, CARAMEL. SERIOUS!

Gandines really surprised us with this compelling, and serious White Burgundy. Fully ripe and lush, but with juicy acidity and complex minerality. This kind of power usually comes from the big boys north of the Macon in the Cotes de Beaune. Aged in enormous 3000 liter old oak barrels that soften the wine without giving it any oak flavor, it is possibly the most impressive Chardonnay available at this price!

Serving Suggestion: Steamed or raw oysters. Black sea bass poached in olive oil with fresh thyme. Roast turkey with truffles or chanterelles.

Arnaud Baur is proud of his organic vineyards in Alsace, where organic isn't the norm. He points to the brown, lifeless rows of his neighbor's non-organic vineyards, a stark contrast to his vibrantly green vines. A Pinot Noir from Alsace, despite being the region’s most significant red grape, is something we don’t see every day. Historically it's been too cold here to ripen red grapes, but as the world warms, spots like this are increasingly producing delicate reds.

Albeit brimming with tons of bright fruit, there's a complex touch of earthiness to stave off any accusations of simplicity. RIPE RED RASPBERRY RICHNESS, SPLENDID SPICE & TANTALIZING TANG

“Vin de France” or “Tavel by any other name”? This new Domaine La Rocalière offering’s packaging tells us very little: it’s from France and it’s a "rosé wine." Its appearance, on the other hand, speaks volumes (750ml, to be precise). Deep transparent red with an almost iridescent magenta flourish, it doesn’t have the look of a typical, pale, Mediterranean French rosé. Instead, it's deep and dark yet still refreshing – a dead-ringer for the famed wines of Tavel but clocking in at half the price. A WINE AUTHORITIES EXCLUSIVE!

A collaboration between the famous Gamay and the decidedly less famous but very rosé-friendly workhorse grape, Grolleau, this vibrant, ruby-tented sipper is an elegantly expressive and beautifully balanced representative of what we love about Middle Loire rosé. While it hails from Anjou, it’s a very different beast from the famously off-dry blushes of the Anjou region we might have expected a generation ago. No, this one is completely dry with flourishes of red berry and tart, stone fruit-like flavors. The finish is cleansing and supported by delicately mineralistic notes, making this a great companion for delicate, salty dishes with high acidity and/or creamy consistencies.

Domaine La Ligiere, Vaucluse Rosé "Sud Absolu", Southern Rhone, France 2018

{organic} 100% Carignan

JUICY RASPBERRY & LEMON ZEST, FIRM & HYPER-REFRESHING

Carignan, with its reputation for robust rusticity, is probably not the grape that you'd immediately suspect upon tasting this vibrantly berryish, lean, clean, and by no means mean rosé from the northwestern fringe of the Provençal countryside. As eloquently balanced as this wine is, we can't help but think of it as the adult equivalent of a raspberry-lemon push pop – served cold and filled with firm red fruit flavors and citrusy tang! This is just one of the many gems from Domaine La Ligière's paradisiacal Southern Rhone vineyards…

Serving Suggestion: Papaya salad w/ grilled squid & pork. Battered & fried cubanelle peppers w/ lemon juice & paprika.

2018 Rouge "Initial R" (Rocalière, Domaine la)

Domaine la Rocalière, Rouge "Initial R", Rhone Valley, France 2018

{organic} 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah

BLACKBERRY & BAKED STRAWBERRY, DARK CHOCOLATE & GARRIGUES

Hailing from the western reaches of the Southern Rhone, the red entry into Rocalière's “Initial R” series is an impressive counterpart to the estate’s robust Lirac Rouge and carries itself with a similar heft of the spicy Mediterranean French perfumes collectively known as “Garrigues.” Sèverine Lemoine crafts all of her wines biodynamically, and her attention to detail and work ethic is evident. Full-bodied, energetic, and a little bit rugged, this is an ideal candidate for “house wine” to red wine lovers who demand an additional intensity from their favorite daily tipple. Vive le Mediterranée!

Serving Suggestion: Hamburger (or “lamburger”) w/ Gruyere & rosemary-balsamic seasoned crimini mushrooms. Black bean chili w/ jalapeño, cilantro, cumin, sour cream, & avocado.

{biodynamic} 50% Grenache, 50% Syrah

FLESHY BLACK FRUIT, DARK & ROASTY, LAVENDER-LISCIOUS

This newly-named cuvée from Domaine La Ligière is perhaps not as unfamiliar as it first appears. Replacing the “Sud Absolu” Rouge, it continues in that wine’s tradition of championing the often-less lauded Carignan grape. True to form, it exudes the impressive garrigues and dense, dark fruit that we expect from the variety, the Vaucluse department, and Ligière, itself. Tempered by its often better-behaved colleague, Syrah, it's an absolutely beautiful addition to any dinner table.

Serving Suggestions: Juicy brisket rubbed w/ rosemary & thyme. Ratatouille w/ eggplant, tomato, squash, & garlic (or perhaps eggplant parmesan).

RIPE BLACK RASPBERRIES, GARRIGUES. FIRM & FIERCELY PURPLE

Nestled amongst the garrigues surrounded by pine forest, the few acres of Borie la Vitarèle's oldest vines are treated like a private garden employing biodynamic compost made from local plants. Hand-harvesting ensures quality, and the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak. Dark purple, it exudes fresh aromas of ripe raspberries, thyme, and lavender. 2018 Saint-Joseph Rouge "Terra Nostra" (Barou, Domaine)

Domaine Barou, Saint-Joseph Rouge "Terra Nostra", Rhone Valley, France 2018

{biodynamic} 100% Syrah

CASSIS & BLACK PLUM, LEATHER & A WHISPER OF CHIMNEY SMOKE

Saint-Joseph is a mystifyingly sprawling appellation - a narrow 40 mile strip from north to south on the Rhone river’s right bank. As one might imagine, quality from domaine to domaine is not consistent, but some of the absolute best Northern Rhone “values" (we’re talking about sub-$100, here) can be found in various corners of the region. This is a noteworthy contender for the most distinctive Northern Rhone red we’ve carried. It tastes like the label might suggest – autumnal, colorful, romantic, and mysterious. This is masterful Syrah that’s every bit as generous as its Grenache-driven neighbors to the south and Pinot Noir colleagues to the north in Burgundy.

Serving suggestion: Duck bacon. Venison. Riceberry risotto (made with smoked gouda & smoked carrot slivers).

Saumur and the more revered (exclusively red) Saumur Champigny provide us with some of the most elegant, delicate, and aromatic Cabernet Franc we’ll encounter. The gentle, silky tannins and extroverted purple-red fruit are subtle and seductive, supported by a potpourri of dill, juniper, and dried flowers which, while the wines in question are undeniably different, could make sought after Oregonian Pinots positively green with envy. Formerly among our selections as Domaine Guilloterie, Patrice and Philippe Duveau’s wines have long been among our favorites from this enclave of the Loire Valley.

{organic} 80% Semillon, 10% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Muscadelle

APRICOT & CLEMENTINE, HONEY, SPICE & WHITE TRUFFLE

Not just any mold, botrytis is a truly noble rot which contributes its fuzzy charm to the exteriors of late-harvested grapes destined for the world's most celebrated dessert wines. Sauternes, a southerly enclave of Bordeaux, is arguably the capital of this unexpected but beautiful phenomenon. The traditional Sémillon, Muscadelle, and Sauvignon Blanc grapes are concentrated by the fungus's leeching out of moisture from the grapes (a process which does nothing to endanger the health of the vines) into a decadent, nectary elixir which fermentation transforms into a decadent dessert wine (albeit one which is often not served with dessert).

Serving Suggestion: Often served w/ savory hedonistic fare such as patés & decadent cheeses. Japanese sun-dried persimmons & other sweet, shriveled fruits.
